FILM REACTS
Added 2024-07-27 01:13:48 +0000 UTCYou guys had some really good picks for movies. I have seen a couple of them (they are liked) but I chose 5 suggestions, now I just need your help. CHOOSE YOUR FIGHTER! also, it helps to give a lil description on the movie so I won't have to look up every trailer lmao

I agree. I love the world and no one can take that away from me. There are many authors I disagree with as someone who studied literature, but I still read their work if it represents love and hope or is something I can learn and grow from. I have family who support political beliefs of hate and are completely opposite of me, but I still love them. You cannot change people by hating and destroying them, you change them through love and by showing how beautiful, loving, and giving that which they are against truly is.

2024-08-01 17:12:28 +0000 UTCchrist, i am so sorry, this comment got away from me. real quick: what new meaning of death of the author? and how does the classic meaning not hold up? it's literally "a literary theory that argues that the meaning of a text is not determined by the author's intention, but rather by the reader's interpretation." is it related to this idea? (https://katestuartauthor.com/death-of-the-author-has-its-use-changed/) if so, i see where the confusion comes from and i guess you could say i'm somewhere in the middle; if she intended to spread her shitty views through her books (i don't think she did merely because i don't think she thought about trans people at all,) then she failed miserably. she was one of the authors that disparaged fic writers for a long time so that's what i'm going based off of, and the fact that she seems pretty incapable of significant change so i imagine that some part of her still hates it even if she says she doesn't publicly. as for engaging in things like fan projects like artworks, reactions, unofficial merch etc: as long as the actual creator of that specific work puts some kind of unmissable warning like "hey, don't buy official because xyz, buy only fanworks or secondhand if you must (since the author gets nothing from secondhand purchases)," i find no problem with it. my personal stance is that i was bullied horrendously for loving HP when i was a kid (by everyone but ironically led by the "friends" who got me into it) and it followed me for YEARS and i know i wasn't the only one. i refuse to let jkr ruin it for me, especially since she was never directly a big part of what i loved about the world, and i absolutely refuse to get bullied and shamed AGAIN for enjoying the world of HP (not that you are, you've actually been very sweet, but there has been so much again.) HP was a comfort for me, one of the first books that really got me into reading and fantasy and it taught me a lot about not respecting authority JUST because they're an authority, that it needs to be earned and power revoked if abused. it was also ironically anti-bigotry in a broad sense and i don't think i'm wrong when i say i'm pretty sure most if not all of us took that to mean ANY form of discrimination was bad. jkr's shitty beliefs and personality doesn't change those learned lessons even if she herself fails in upholding them i understand and respect some people's need to distance themselves from it after everything (as sad as it makes me to hear that former fans like yourself really lost something precious for it, truly) but i'm not letting anyone take this from me, too, not if i can help it. i hope i don't come off like an insensitive dick in this, i don't think i'm about to convince anyone of my stance, i'm just trying to explain my small side of things.

2024-07-31 16:09:01 +0000 UTCI see HP is winning but I do think in the order of the voting you should still watch all of those films and react to them eventually. All incredible! My vote was LOTR but HP also a beautiful series. Parasite also incredible, Little women great film, haven’t seen baby driver to say though

2024-07-29 10:37:06 +0000 UTCI might have to temporarily unsubscribe if Harry Potter wins. It’s just too viscerally upsetting after the things she’s said about people like me. I used to be one of the biggest Potterheads around—I own a Hogwarts uniform, a wand, everything. But that was before she started talking about how trans people are misguided or predatory, etc. Although many of the actors in the movies have spoken out in favor of trans people, any money that goes to JKR actively goes toward political donations that cut down human rights and make life hard for trans people in the UK (and the rest of the world because of their influence).

2024-07-28 05:55:00 +0000 UTCThe main problem with death of the author in this case (beyond assuming you mean it in the new sense, rather than the original sense—otherwise your comment doesn’t add up) is that she puts any money she receives toward actively attacking people like me. She also always supported fandom, and has stated that she takes any support of the franchise to be support for her bigotry. :( Making the characters trans doesn’t really fight that, since she’s not reading the fics herself, just viewing the engagement numbers (for liability reasons). Does that make sense?

2024-07-28 05:48:58 +0000 UTCStrongly agree with this take as a trans person. 😬 I definitely will not be watching any HP stuff because it makes me too miserable now that I know exactly how much she hates me. (Personally, I wish LOTR was winning—it’s amazing. )

2024-07-28 05:45:05 +0000 UTCI’ve seen Percy Jackson!! :) but yes I’ll be streaming illegally

2024-07-27 20:10:47 +0000 UTCI know HP is winning; please consider though that maybe we shouldn't be giving a JK Rowling anymore of a platform, unless it's to be critical of her work. Death of the author can't really exist of the profits of said work are going to transphobic organisations!! If u have to, then consider streaming it illegally, and pls acknowledge all the LGBTQ+ discourse surrounding this series, as we can't really remove something like this from its IRL context <3 I'd like to suggest, alternatively, reacting to the new Percy Jackson Series! It has a similarly huge fanbase and nostalgia, even though the disney series is pretty recent! <3

2024-07-27 20:06:24 +0000 UTCbecause the author, jkr, sucks as a human. she's a terf. however, death of the author imo; divorce the author from the work, especially when it belongs more to the world than it does to the author in question due to how widespread and beloved the books got. what better way to piss off a problematic author than to engage in the parts of fandom she always disliked i.e. fanfiction and making the world into something she (ironically) doesn't agree with?

2024-07-27 15:20:57 +0000 UTCok looks like HP is winning by a landslide but imma say right now that if and when you eventually watch lord of the rings, you should watch the extended editions; there's more context in them and good lord, is it helpful lol

2024-07-27 14:26:13 +0000 UTCI grew up obsessed with Harry Potter but it just makes me nauseous now so I won't be watching it but I suggested and voted for Baby Driver, it's one of my favorite movies ever by my all time favorite director Edgar Wright. Parasite would be my second choice. hope y'all enjoy what you watch. ✌️

2024-07-27 10:06:08 +0000 UTCI voted for Harry Potter but only if you can find a way to watch that doesn't involve giving money to JK Rowling's transphobic ass.

2024-07-27 03:33:15 +0000 UTCAlso.. where the LOTR/Lauryn fanbase crossover?! Literally the best film trilogy of all time 😩
Joanna
2024-07-27 02:37:06 +0000 UTCIf/when you do Little Women it’s gotta be the 1994 🙏🏼 Greta Gerwigs was pretty good but that one is a classic way truer to the book
Joanna
2024-07-27 02:34:49 +0000 UTCI voted Harry Potter but Little Women is a close second! I wanna add Pride and Prejudice (adaptation with Kiera Knightly)
