I interpreted as the siren being a metaphor for something u can’t resist even though you know it will hurt you but you do it anyway because you hope that it will different to what u originally thought. I think she’s saying the ocean is a kin to being with someone who’s world you will never actually be allowed in as you’ll notice she never goes into the ocean with her only the pool to be intimate with her lover. I think another part a lot people miss is when she meets her at the beach and the siren has blood on her face (I see this as like a metaphor for lipstick on someone’s collar or just a tell that they are not being faithful) but instead of leaving her and getting mad she wipes the blood off and smiles at her making herself pretend to not see what’s in front her because she would rather have some of her than not at all. She then decorates her room and does thing to make the siren more comfortable in her world because she can never be apart of hers and until she puts the welcome home sign the siren is fine keeping her around on her terms but when she realises she wants her worlds to be merged she leaves. And even at the end she’s still walking by the beach with the same iceypole that attracted the siren in the first place and I think maybe because she’s tempting her to see if she’ll take the bait and take a bite out of her again despite everything I don’t want to reach too much but it hit me close to home as someone who’s been with an abusive partner (not saying this is the same) but having that feeling of truly falling in love with a different version of someone in your head and getting those little snippets of the positive parts that reel u back in and make u justify and wipe away the evidence in your head of what’s truly happening to you and that u want to believe them when they promise you different but it ultimately leaves you stuck in the cycle and often ends exactly like this where you are made to feel like the stupid one. Side note her acting in the video genuinely brought me to tears I love her so much truly as a bi girly I had the same exact reaction to my kink is karma and for some reason her dressed as lady liberty at her live show did something to me…

I know she wrote it after being dropped by her record label, but the actual clips of things she did while trying to get signed to Atlantic & even footage from photo shoots, that smooth transition from the background she used to make YouTube videos at 16 to singing the song in front of it now - wow. just wow.

If you can find the video of her Coachella performance, I would highly recommend, that plus the Tiny Desk is what set off this massive take off for her. Also, most of these videos were filmed during Covid when she was dropped from her label and she was just putting out singles to try and get traction and money to make her album.

2024-07-03 03:15:06 +0000 UTCalso, the videos you saw that weren't on 'rise and fall of a midwest princess' aren't new videos, they're older ones. she was signed to atlantic records when she was 17 and released an ep titled 'school nights' which is where those are from. it's wild that after she released 'pink pony club' in 2020 atlantic dropped her. HUGE mistake.
