is it normal for the thread to show from the inside of the book?

My jute cord varies a bit in thickness as it's a bit uneven, but it's around 3 mm thick, and the waxed thread is 0.7 mm thick. I know some bookbinders use thinner threads, but I don't think thicker thread should be an issue! When I made books with stained paper they were usually 110-120 gsm, and they didn't align perfectly when folded and put in signatures of 4 - but it's not visible in the final result because of the wrinkled pages and overall unevenness :) If you think it looks weird at the fore-edge of the text block when you make signatures of 4 you could adjust it after sewing by using a sharp box knife or x-acto knife and cut a straight line at the edge of the entire text block to get it to the same shape. I guess it depends on the look you're going for :) Hopw this helps!

May I ask how thick your Jute cord and your thread are? My Jute cord is 3.5mm and my waxed thread is a 1mm thick. Do you think it might be too thick? Also, I stained 130gsm papers and made the signatures 3pages instead of 4 because 4 feel to thick? And the pages don't seem to align all that well. Seeing that you stain 150gms paper and put them into fours, should I do that too?

Hm, good question! I personally think it's easier to punch the holes after folding the paper and making the marks on the spine, and in my experience, staining paper after folding it makes the fold more brittle. So if you were to punch the holes first you'd have to also fold it first, and in that case the fold would become more brittle after staining - if that makes sense

Why not punch the holes before staining? Then you can be a little rougher with the paper when punching the holes.
