A pearl in Manhattan

I read a story once that a gentleman was having his usual lunch at the oyster bar in Grand Central Station (oyster soup!) and bit into something hard.

It was a pearl valued at $4,000.

I love the idea that something so beautiful accidentally exists in this filthy city.  It got me more curious about pearls (and oysters), so I went on to read much more about them.  It turns out a pearl is the result of an injury, essentially - it is an ulcer.  The pearl develops when the oyster shell has encountered a trauma.
How beautiful is that?

One of your best sets yet

Have you read the book about oysters in NYC history, by Mark Kurlansky? He’s a great nonfiction writer who came to fame with his groundbreaking book on the history of cod. His NYC Oyster book is fascinating: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/96276/the-big-oyster-by-mark-kurlansky/
