My first time being tied up...
Viewing shibari in photo and videos is one thing, seeing it performed live is another. Experiencing it first hand is a very special moment indeed. If you've ever gotten to see a performance, it very tender in a surprising way - especially considering the history behind the practice.

I had been curious, mostly because of the look I saw on other people's faces while they were tied. They looked so peaceful. It's not inherently sexual actually, I mean it doesn't have to be. It can be very therapeutic, as it requires you to let go of control (so hard) and trust the rigger. I knew I needed to be tied by a woman for my first time, so I called my friend Shira (@shiraties on IG).
She made the experience so special and peaceful, talking me through some ideas and options first. I let her know I have scoliosis so I was nervous about suspension and my body's limited abilities, as well as that I was a little bit...claustrophobic and the idea of not being able to use my hands was a bit scary. She took all of this into consideration and started building one section at a time as I got accustomed to the feeling of being squeezed tight. She did such a beautiful job I think, slowly building and checking in with me all along.
After the more intense moments, when she would untie something...I felt the craziest sensation of release. Like the rush of endorphins you get after you go to the gym. It is a physical workout in a way I wasn't expecting!
Something she mentioned about her first time being suspended was that she really appreciated getting to feel sexual, without being sexualized (by the other person there). They are there to perform their craft, make sure you're safe, and create a space for you to feel as sensual as you want - without ever being objectified. I could go on about why she is so good at this, but I think you can see what I mean hopefully!
While she's not a photographer herself, she took photos to document the moment...and I thought about going through and editing them more to look polished (lighting, color, etc), but I think I prefer to let the experience be shown more raw here.
