The Bridge

I wrote an arrogant essay once in high school after reading Portrait of The Artist as a Young Man. Haha, I had an epiphany of sorts.

I believed that some people on this earth are born with certain abilities, and along with it a duty which requires us serve as a liaison between a metaphysical realm that other earthlings cannot as easily access.

Translators. We are to create a bridge, a portal between realms so everyone can experience...beauty I think?

The moments you are transported to a place where you can understand beauty are created by an artist, a musician, a dancer, a writer.

Consonantia, Claritas, Integritas

Its dimensions should suitably correspond to other physical objects as well as to a metaphysical ideal, an end.

It should clearly radiate intelligibility, the logic of its inner being and impress this knowledge of itself on the mind of the perceiver.

It must not be deficient in what it needs to be most itself.

Maybe it's arrogant, but I knew in that moment as a teenager that I was A Bridge. If you've ever wondered why artists are so distraught, it's because that sense of duty can feel so fucking heavy. Especially when you feel like you're not fulfilling it. Although we get very wrapped up in ourselves, because we have to create our own personal bridges too. The searching for pathways and portals is never ending.

It's constantly nagging at you, the call. I hate it haha! It means when I start to make money, I often end up running the opposite direction. Because I know it distracts and derails me from the cause. I think artists get each other no matter how different their taste or style is, because we are brethren, a secret order that most of us aren't even aware of. Or maybe I making this all up.

I'm not sure sex work qualifies. It brings people joy and pleasure, relief maybe. But I don't think it's a Bridge.

I guess all of this came to mind because of Virgil Abloh's death today. He was 41 years old, and had secretly been battling a very aggressive cancer for over two years. Please Google him. I can't even do him justice to explain. It's not just about design or fashion, or architecture or Kanye Fucking West [whom - Ihate to break it to you -is also a Bridge]. Virgil saw things, and he made so many bridges, massive bridges. It was clear he was searching for something, and he shared the inside of his brain with us.

Look up his dj radio show, it was called TELEVISED RADIO. I found so much new music through that.

Okay, I'm tired. More thoughts on this in the future. thank you for tuning in.

"A metaphysical ideal, an end." My duty is to show you that end. Maybe we'll cross that bridge when we get there...

I still think about these lines from Portrait all these years later.

April 16. Away! Away! The spell of arms and voices: the white arms of roads, their promise of close embraces and the black arms of tall ships that stand against the moon, their tale of distant nations. They are held out to say: We are alone—come. And the voices say with them: We are your kinsmen. And the air is thick with their company as they call to me, their kinsman, making ready to go, shaking the wings of their exultant and terrible youth.

I feel this very strongly as a fellow artist.
