I've never really heard someone speak the way he does, and I don't mean that soothing voice or particular enunciation (althought it doesn't hurt). He was a scientist, yes, but a dreamer. Willing to recognize that somethings, like hope, could never be explained by science.
I re-watched Contact recently, a movie based on the book of the same name by Carl Sagan and the movie produced after his death with the help of his beloved wife Ann Druyan. Yeah it's a just another mid 90's blockbuster mainstream film. But, just as in the book, it explores the juxtaposition of science and faith. The facts and the research alongside the of heart of humanity.
How many scientists write....fiction? Fantasy? Because that's what this story was, it was Carl's own fantasy. His obsession with the notion of interstellar contact and travel...and that it would be an awful waste of space if we were alone in this universe. What published, accredited, highly respected scientist writes his own fantasy - his own hope - into a story like that? Carl. I fucking love this guy.
He was also the man behind The Golden Record, on Voyager I and Voyager II. You know, when a bunch of NASA money went into creating an encyclopedia of humanity and launching into space in 1977. He was inspired by a time capsule buried in the ground at the World's Fair in 1939 when he was not yet 5 years old. He grew up and made it fucking happen. And GUESS WHAT - it's still out there today, and just 2 years ago it reached interstellar space - the space between galaxies...the unknown vastness beyond our own home we call the Milky Way. The spacecraft itself has a life expectancy until at least 2161. Carl did that, that seed was planted in 1939. If that isn't hope, faith, and vision, I don't know what is.
In Cosmos he writes, "Some stars are so close that they touch, and starstuff flows between them."

This is so fucking good! Perfect music, lighting, and moves... your creativity is leveled up... Sagan was and is the quintessential thought provocateur...
