I was happily surprised to see you react to this one this month I really love the acting foremost as they all work on knowing their roles and giving it a human element. From researching, they tend to pick key points and dramatize those. There are some definite changes, especially later on, to make it TV-worthy, but it at least gives a great starting off point to doing your own research. Plus, I've loved participating in this special discounted reaction offer and I like how you loved both Black Mirror and The Crown and seemed interested, at least, in AHS (which I kinda picked because you'd seen both The Resident and The Good Wife)

Dickie Mountbatten was maternal uncle to Prince Philip. He took him under his wing, and Philip chose to take the Mountbatten name. That was Churchill's argument to the Queen when she said she wanted to take his name; it's not even his real name! Your comparison to Megan Markle was actually more spot on than I think you realize. The abdicated King Edward (real name David) wanted to marry Wallis Simpson, an American actress and divorcee. Megan Markle is an American actress and Divorcee. Of course times have change since even then, as divorce is pretty rampant in the Royal Household these days, but was very much frowned upon in the early 20th century. The Queen made her uncle apologize, blaming him for her becoming Queen. The thing is, he never had any children, so when he died she actually would have inherited the throne anyway, as she was next in line. Although I think the whole point is, that if he hadn't married Wallis, then he would have remained King and taken a different wife and be expected to have children as successor, so I do get her point. Oh, and one last thing; you not knowing the history of this part of the Royal Family won't dampen your viewing experience, or ours. Many Americans fell in love with this show BECAUSE they didn't know the history. Of course, much of what happened behind closed doors in real life is just made up to fill in the blanks, but the major historical points will be pretty close to accurate. For example, the details of the weekly conversation between the Prime Minister and Monarch are 100% confidential, never documented, and never discussed outside of the room, but the writers have to write something.
