Second episodes are always pretty interesting, but I feel like this was quite the departure from the norm. Almost every Doctor with new companion combo, the end of the first episode is the companion(s) *choosing* to go with the Doctor, so the second episode has always been the Doctor trying to show off. This is pretty much the first intro to new companions where they were accidentally kidnapped and forced to travel with the Doctor at the end of the first episode. Then instead of the usual show-off episode it's instead a race to safety. I think it was a brave choice by Chibnal to switch up the formula. Personally I don't think it landed as well as it could have, but I do give him kudos for taking the reigns and trying something a little different.
