This episode hits me real hard too JRabbit. I feel like maybe it hit you most as a mother, whereas for me I saw myself in Colin a little bit. I mean, my real name is Colin and you don't get many TV characters with that name, so I instantly latched onto him as my favorite character and was devasted to have him torn away in the space of one episode. I think what this show does really well is make us see what it truly was like. It wasn't just the promiscuous ones that got it. It could literally happen to anyone. From a writing perspective I think it's genius how we see all these different scenario's play out through the eyes of this one group of friends; Colin's friend from work who didn't know what the illness was and dies unexpectedly. Gloria's family completely deny their son even existed, stole him away from his friends. Donald (Ritchies new boyfriend) just "goes home" never revealing why, but of course we all know (incidentally that line from Ritchie's agent "don't go home" hits me really hard), and then we have Colin, had sex with one person, has a mother who loves him to the end of the earth, and spends his dying days surrounded by all of his loved ones, but not really knowing what's going on. Such a heartbreaking story, but written from experience and really showcases the fear, the unknown, and the reality of the AIDS crisis in the 80's. I remember in the early 2000's going for an HIV test, and being told that it has a 90 day incubation period so if I'd had sex in the last 90 days that essentially wouldn't be detected by this test. So add that 6 weeks waiting on results and you've got an 18 week window where you could actually have HIV but test negative. At least today it's detectable much sooner, and the results come back much quicker too. AND you can even take "morning-after" medication if you need it. The world has come such a long way from these days thankfully.
