This movie blew me away. I had never seen the stage musical but I did know some of the songs from randomized Broadway playlists. I didn't realize the movie would look LIKE THAT or that the story would be so affecting. The two leads were incredible. I only knew Ariana Grande as a singer so I wasn't expecting great acting but honestly, she stole the movie for me for 2/3rds of it. Then we get to Oz and Cynthia Erivo absolutely took over every scene. What a powerful finale.
I didn't even think about this but you're so right, RJ. The director would be perfect for a superhero movie, especially since a lot of the post-Endgame superhero stuff have been kind of lackluster. Might even be good for the upcoming X-Men movies since comic X-Men have such a soap opera vibe.

I really enjoyed this movie (well it was in my top 5 for last year and I saw a lot of new movies, but I think it was like 3 or 4 (after Inside Out 2 and Deadpool and Wolverine)) and I think they are both great actors. I especially like Arianna's portrayal of Galinda/Glinda and they were unsure of her opera type singing when casting her but she proved them wrong.
Cynthia Erivo has massive performance talent, she is a great singer and actor and really embodies the role. That being said, I really hope she isn't cast in anything where the role has already been crafted over time and is held in a beloved position by fans again (like Marvel) due to how she has treated fans of the Wicked show behind the scenes. Maybe she can do DC superhero movies, but I'd say stay far away from Marvel. Again, on screen she is beautiful and talented and should have just let her performance speak for itself because then the world would love her rather than be divided.
She needs new roles to pioneer and make her own :)

I have seen the musical a few times (going to see it again tomorrow actually) so promise no spoilers for act 2. In terms of timeline they never actually specify in the synopsis, just that it's "some years later." The play and the novel vastly differ so what happens in the novel doesn't necessarily apply to the play or the movie, but in the novel it's around 5 years.
Not sure if you were aware, but they are actually singing live. During defying gravity, Cynthia is doing her own stunts, and has a microphone in her hat. There isn't a single second of lip synching in this movie at all. It makes the vocal performances just even more impressive.
For those of us who have seen the musical on stage, we are still in for a surprise in part 2 as they've announced 2 new songs, one of which Cynthia Erivo co-wrote so I'm super excited to hear those. Great reaction, excited to get a part 2 reaction when it's out.

Yeah, I agree with ya'll. I saw the interviews Cynthia and Ariana both look very sickly and lost a lot of weight since this movie. I know the fans go feral whenever anyone mentions their weight. But I said that but I said what I said be mad, sweetie. Overall enjoyed the movie, I think Cynthia has a beautiful voice and I got legit goosebumps when she sang that final song. I also love it when they sing together it's beautiful. Like I can feel their emotions in the song. I saw the play years ago, but I didn't remember all of this haha Can't wait for part 2.
