The creator has said in interviews that is is loosely based on it? I can't find any sources on this? Any idea where this comes from? Personally I would be inclined to look at the sources on somewhere like Wikipedia or even many other articles including quotes from the creator before listening to/trusting someone known as a plagiarist with questionable morals and she seems to be someone who makes assumptions. (in some cases, I am sure not all of her stuff is like that. Sorry if your a fan of hers but its just what I have found) I am not really disputing what happened at brothers home anyway, just whether squid game was based on it. Also even from the description you gave it still does not sound much like squid games, just a horrible torture/concentration camp even if they did do "torture games" these "games" are not really like squid games. Maybe I am just being too particular but it is a real thing that happened so I feel like its needed. Also to be clear, I does seem to have some very loose similarities but I just can't see any evidence that would say its based on it. If the creator actually did come out and say yes it was loosely based on this then that's fine I just have not found him saying this anywhere and some people seemed to be saying it is not just loosely based on it but saying that its straight up based on brothers home which does not seem to be the case as well as the AI images people were posting around trying to say that even the look of the facility is the same, the walls, the stairs etc. Don't get me wrong its interesting to talk about the few similarities but its a little bit of a stretch to say squid game is based on it when he has already talked about his inspirations. The creator has said - “When I started, I was in financial straits myself and spent much time in cafes reading comics including ‘Battle Royale’ and ‘Liar Game.’ I came to wonder how I’d feel if I took part in the games myself. But I found the games too complex, and for my own work focused instead on using kids’ games,” Hwang said. He then goes on to talk about the inspiration from the 2009 motor strikes. EDIT: Also check this as well as others. https://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/nation/2025/01/113_390188.html EDIT 2: (In reply to below comment) Sorry for the wall of text but It would not let me post a new reply for some reason- I already looked at what you linked below, unless I somehow missed something those sources are related to the actual brother house, still nothing regarding squid game or the creator of squid game Also I think I only found like one or two sources that mentioned the word "games" and even then explains it nothing like squid game, mainly just torture, beatings, etc and most of them don't even use the word "games". I think this is just a rumour/assumption that has spread around because some people saw some similarities. I am not saying a everything she says in the podcast is wrong, pretty much just the fact squid game is based on brothers house which there is no proof of (at least yet). I am not even sure if she even says that outright anyway in the podcast itself, just implies it maybe. She may also dramatize things a little for entertainment value which I don't think is really needed considering how horrible the brothers house thing is. (I believe she is also known for doing that in the past as well as like I said before plagiarizing other peoples work.) Also worth noting the production note at the bottom "Rotten Mango has not done original reporting on this case. The stories are based on existing material (listed in show notes). The RM team works hard to make sure everything you’re listening to is as accurate as possible and we try to use multiple sources to verify the facts. Creative liberties may be taken in certain cases during the presentation of the case." And as I said none of the sources relate to squid game, just brothers house. Only reason I said anything was because I have seen some people say that in the past and others post those AI images and it was not true and I thought it was worth mentioning that it was not actually true. I know its not a big deal really but still thought it was worth setting straight. Its nothing against you or anything.

Btw, people have been saying that, but Its not actually based on brothers home, people have been spreading AI generated pictures saying it looks like real squid game. Although brothers home was real, it was a internment camp they put "vagrants" including people they forced to confess to crimes they didn't commit. It got the nickname Korean Auschwitz and there was torture and stuff going on, I am not sure if there was any "games" they were doing, I think it was forced labour, torture and stuff like that, messed up stuff. Though I believe the inmates were given numbers like in squid game. The creator had said that he had inspiration from the "2009 Ssangyong Motor strikes" in season 1.
