This is a great episode, there was a best episode poll and this episode was chosen by fans as the best episode of Doctor Who as a whole, can't say I disagree. I think this episode has so much going on, with the dialogue and incredible acting from Peter Capaldi, holding down an entire episode on his own. The score which is amazing and the twists and complicated plot dealing with death and grief. It is an amazingly well done episode. I also almost lost it at that moment when Clara showed up and put her hand on the Doctor's face. The Doctor kept going for 2 billion years, when it got to that point he knew how long it had been, yet he kept going, that is crazy to think about. Great reaction, I'm glad you both enjoyed it, I look forward to the next one.

Wow that's such a beautiful comment. So sorry to read of your friend passing. ❤️

A note about the skull, it is actually modeled after Capaldis head. They used a cast they made for the ghost doctor in the episodes in the lake earlier in the season. Weird to think about him carrying a replica of his own skull

Finally! To say I've been anticipating this moment would be a huge understatement. This is my all time favorite episode of Doctor Who, and if I'm being honest, probably my favorite episode of any TV show. There is so much to say about it, so I apologize for the long comment ahead. One of the reasons this episode hits so hard for me is that when I first saw this I was in a bad place. A close friend who I thought of as a younger sister had taken her life only a few weeks before this aired. While the previous episode definitely brought me to tears, the on screen death of a TV character was nothing compared to what I was already feeling at the time so it didn't impact me as strongly as this one did. The entire episode is really built around grief and loss, and the lines about it in this episode hit hard. Particularly "It's funny, the day you lose someone isn't the worst. At least you've got something to do. It's all the days they stay dead." That was the moment I knew I'd found exactly what I needed at that time. The doctor grieving for Clara throughout the episode, forgetting at moments that she wasn't there is probably the most human we've ever seen him. Everyone who's lost someone knows that feeling of starting to call, or text or reach out for someone and catching themselves when they realize the other person is no longer there. Capaldi does a brilliant job of capturing that and an even better job of expressing how much those moments suck. One of the things I've noticed reactors sometimes miss is that he has no memory of his previous attempt which is why he repeats the same thing over and over until that moment in front of the wall. Some people claim that it's not as bad because physically he's only been there for a few weeks before a new copy starts over. But at the moment he gets to the wall he remembers everything. Every cycle, and every death, every moment he's spent in the castle all hits him at once, making his cries asking why he can't just lose all the more impactful. He feels all the years he's been there even if his body doesn't show it, which is also the opposite of how Ashildr couldn't remember her past because her brain could only hold so many memories. The doctor's brain unfortunately can hold it all and he is forced to remember it all at once. I've said it before but I'll say it again here, Peter Capaldi is the absolute master of monologues. Never in my wildest dreams did I think one man could carry an entire episode entirely on his own, much less make it one of the most emotional, beautiful and heartbreaking episodes I've ever seen but somehow he pulled it off. I could go on for hours so I'll cut it short here but I'll mention that there is a YouTube video on the doctor who channel with the song at the end highlighting the entire episode that is worth a watch. The song is called The Shepherd's Boy and to this day it's my favorite Doctor Who track by a mile. Can't wait for the next episode.

I definitely recommend doing a rewatch if you get a chance. The first time it's all about the mystery unfolding, leading up to that twist ending, whereas the rewatch is all about seeing the clues that are clearly laid out that we all missed the first time lol. My favorite one is when we get a close-up of the Doctors face and he says "It's a trap" as it slowly fades to a close-up of the skull. HIS skull!! That being said, I thought JRabbit clocked it early on. You did say at one point "is he caught in some kind of time loop?" On IMBD this episode is rated 2nd highest only to Blink, however it did get significantly fewer people leaving reviews. By this point, the show had lost a large number of viewers. Sadly a significant portion of the fans dropped off when the Doctor wasn't hot enough, or young enough for them anymore which is a real shame because Capaldi is frickin awesome as the Doctor. I think if this series was still at the same level of popularity as Tenant and Smiths series had been, this episode would have been rated higher than Bink. It's certainly my favorite. I have to say, it really was a mixture of the writing, direction, acting, AND music, but I think of all the Doctors you've seen so far, Capaldi is the only one that could pull this off. Ecclestone, Tenant, and Smith are exceptional actors, but their versions of the Doctor wouldn't have suited this episode. It needed this darker version of the Doctor. Oh and just to close out this comment I'm going to put this fun little visual in y'alls mind. The very first iteration of the Doctor who went into the confession dial. He would have hung his clothes up to dry, but there wouldn't have been any dry clothes for him to take, so he would have spent the rest of the time completely naked! haha, sorry, bet you're all picturing that now 🤣🤣🤣
