As someone who grew up around California evangelicals who believe much fo what Ted Cruz does about Israel, I've never of the relationship of Rome to Israel analogized to the US and Israel. In the circles Im familiar with, Rome is seen as something that helped spread Christianity and brought judgement on Israel for rejecting Jesus, rather than as a protector. Just want to point out that there are differing theologies even within those camps.

2025-06-22 12:13:06 +0000 UTCA better argument for fees I’ve heard recently is this — maybe you’ll get a brief political moment where you can replace transit user fees with broad based progressive taxes. So you get rid of all the infrastructure for collecting transit fees, and that seems like a nice efficiency win (since it costs money to collect money). However, 2 years later the state house flips, and Rs start cutting the transit budget. If the transit organization hadn’t removed all its fee collection infrastructure, it could have responded to a transit budget cut by raising user fees (rather than cutting service, the transit autists’ nightmare). But now they can’t (because bringing back fees costs crazy capital) and so they have no choice but to cut routes and frequencies — an intolerable prospect to those who anthropomorphize trains. In short, transit autists think user fees are “better” because the the power of the purse is held by the heads of transit agencies (who are often themselves fellow transit autists) rather than barbarous state legislatures (who generally are not).
