Im deeply sorry for your loss in Pope Francis’ passing, Liz. He was a great man and one of the best popes the catholic faith could’ve hoped for.

It's always amusing how the Abundists like to bring up the example of post-Deng China as one of their preferred models for growth>redistribution policy as if the opportunity costs of growth versus redistribution (assuming there even are significant opportunity costs) is the same between a middle income developing country and one of the richest (in terms of production per capita) country in the world

Also reminds me of the centrists who use Danish “flexicurity” to bash the left despite the Danish labor market being much more tightly regulated than the US

It seems like the more honest opponents of redistribution tend to think that there’s a chance it would work, but it would be a state of complacency. That we could flatten wealth and make everyone somewhat comfortable and coast on that, or we can keep the pedal pushed into the floor to keep up growth. Ie. we could use productivity gains from new technology to reduce the work week down to 25 hours, but why wouldn’t we keep 40 hours and just squeeze more and more out of those 40? I don’t think these things are actually opposed, but I think it’s an interesting question of when we should ~rest~. Once we’ve developed nuclear fusion energy? Once we’ve cured all disease? Once we’ve colonized 100 planets? When does the grind end for these folks?

The funniest thing to me about the "Denmark" argument in the abundance book is that "getting to Denmark" is like the aspirational goal of Francis Fukuyama's big books on state capacity. Denmark is held out as an example of high capacity states that _do_ build things.
