Interview With Philosopher Bill Edmundson About John Rawls

Edmundson is the author of John Rawls: Reticent Socialist (2017) and Socialism for Soloists (2021). We talk about these two books and his argument that Rawls's theory of justice really generates a socialist conclusion, among other things.

Bill was a much better guest than Matt Stoller: better behaved, more interesting, sense of humor, etc.

Bernie Mac

This was awesome. Matt is an excellent interviewer. More Matt interviews!

Again, such a great listen and really satisfying in so many ways. But it ultimately begs a question that I’ve had for a while now: How have we come this far talking about the means of production and not consider the land, collective ownership of the land and all the resources that can be found in it?? It just seems like a no-brainer: we should all have a sort of divine right to our share of the land, the water and other resources. It would go a long way towards solving the problem of wealth distribution, nipping it in the bud so to speak, because any exploitation/extraction of these common goods could include an up front cost/payment that would go into a common wealth fund and be redistributed evenly to the owners, which is to say every citizen-member of the society controlling said lands. Imagine being born into a social contract like that.

This is great. Hard though not to suspect that Rawls great success was more a function of the things he wouldn't say or carefully elected not to say...

Bill is a brilliant guy and lucid writer. People should also check out his book on Introduction to Rights (2nd edition), which i found to be a fantastic primer on political philosophy generally
