Please get your testosterone tested for the pod Matt 🙏

grace

I must say I was offered a babysitting job on the train home after a 3 day bender…

steph

Not trying to do the "I always knew he was bad" thing but that man's twitter avi should have had a permanent fedora pasted on top idk how people were so shocked.

KMB24

Love the idea of Matt getting really involved in local CT politics

Paige Glowacky

Shout out to Charlize Theron representing white South Africans

Daniel Roberts

The Resistance and Indivisible are still around, see: https://youtu.be/55yf3AstpQI?t=1035

AllOutOfPlans

Also in Stamford, can we get Matt to comment on the reverse privatization of Aquarion?

Nick Rossi

He also practiced drinking untreated water, so something's clearly a bit off.

Ben

also I understand that a lot of scripture is literature full of parables and myths, but since that's a relatively complex way to tell a story compared to Matt's approach of just spelling it all out in a digestible format, wouldn't that mean God is sorta complex?

madeline krane

Liz, as someone who is not christian and does not have a religious background, I genuinely don't understand what you mean by god is simple. obviously, simple is relative, but from my admittedly slight exposure to the Old Testament, god seems to overcomplicate things quite frequently, from testing Eve in genesis to making Noah build an arc, it feels like there are a lot of simpler solutions he could have taken. even our bodies and brains are pretty complex with a ton of moving parts that we're still trying to understand. I sincerely don't get it. not being snide or intentionally obtuse.

madeline krane

Idk Canadian dollars but it's like 14 usd for 1 liter of good stuff. This may be italian bullshit but i just consider it one of the expensive staples, like laundry detergent.

Gina Calabrese

SO COOL

The Bruenigs

the really perverse thing is that i'm eating 1000 calories of tomatoes in the middle of winter edit: also i should be clear that when i say i'm eating a lot of tomatoes, i'm eating tomato mayo sandwiches on potato bread, like two at a time

The Bruenigs

hey just wanted to say liz’ comments about how she was a smol bean that only eats 1000 calories of tomatoes made my gf angry in a way i have not yet seen. which is to say i will be listening to the podcast on my own in the future and liz still has still got it, if she goes back to twitter or bluesky

garf garfsson

Matt you should simply become mayor and save the school lunch program yourself. Then implement socialism

Jacob

A little late but I agree with Matt. He should try to save the free school lunch program.

Matthew Dickinson

did you know that there's a cat species in sri lanka that loves to swim and also that cheetah moms sometimes adopt unrelated cubs

C

liz, i just wrote a book with so many cool animal facts you wouldn't believe it (cats included). i'd be glad to get a copy sent to you if you are interested

C

Hearing ‘borders, a third space’ made me laugh so hard I almost rear ended the car in front of me

Molly

Nah dude, that lunk at the teamsters got some epic concessions for being a sycophantic kiss ass.

And NLRB General Counsel Jennifer Abruzzo is now fired. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/28/us/politics/trump-nlrb-jennifer-abruzzo.html?smid=url-share

Henry George

For real. Haven't they ever seen this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfdTnpV03p8

Henry George

imagine drinking a slurry of milk and olive oil lol

Christian Hunt

The new model is pretty good! More fluid convo, longer audio grab bags, more musings/riffing, which balances out the more sporadic schedule!

CatterpillarYarn

Is olive oil a lot cheaper in your area, or are you buying in such sufficient bulk quantities that it's affordable? In my area, it's about $12 CAD for 750 ml and we use it sparingly!

CatterpillarYarn

Lmao, as a Canadian, I thought the same thing.

CatterpillarYarn

I think the bottom of the vulture article does allege that Gaimen also thinks that Palmer fed the story to the press because their divorce and custody battle (going on 4 years) has been so bitter and financially devastating for Palmer, who is now living with her parents again.

CatterpillarYarn

"The Arab league went to Xinjiang and said there was no genocide and that what western sources are saying isn't consistent with what's going on there" I love the idea that some propaganda tour hosted by the Chinese government for the League of Corrupt Petro States somehow managed to prove that there never have been any police crackdowns, extrajudicial violence, deaths in re-education camps, disappearances, torture, rape, forced labor, forced sterilization, forced abortions, etc. The Saudis tour some Potemkin villages. "Nah, nothing bad ever happened hear. This village elder whose extended family lives in constant surveillance and fear said all those allegations were bullshit." Are you fucking kidding me? Also, it's not just the West that has criticized China for human rights violations: Malaysia, Iran, Indonesia, Kazakstan, India, Pakistan, and, as noted before, the UN have all voiced concerns about human rights abuses in China and against the Uighur minority. So please spare us your Maoist bong-water bullshit.

Henry George

Jesus, according to the article, he was also doing 4 litres of milk PER DAY. He sYs he had acid reflux and was throwing up all the time and I'm just like YEAH, no kidding!

CatterpillarYarn

Also, lol, my entire life I've always pronounced it "guy-man" in my head, ive never actually heard his name properly pronounced outloud. Another real "sillian Murphy" for me 😅

CatterpillarYarn

Curious if all of Gaimen's accusers (7 in total I think?) are also suspected of having sexual relations with Palmer, or if Liz thinks it's just specifically Scarlett Pavlovich who had the affair with Palmer prior to the Gaimen incidents.

CatterpillarYarn

Yeah, even beyond Sandman, I was surprised Liz was not a fan of American Gods with it's commentary about the role of faith in a modern society. Might be up your alley Liz!

CatterpillarYarn

Juan Pablo, the winner of Alone season 9, famously bulked up by drinking straight olive oil (he gained 60 lbs). https://www.outsideonline.com/culture/books-media/alone-champion-juan-pablo-quinonez/

Ben

A few years ago I believed the same things you do. One fact that blew my mind was that there are 56 recognized ethnic groups in China. Only the Han Chinese were subject to the one child policy and largely only in urban areas (this info can be found without much digging). The Arab league went to Xinjiang and said there was no genocide and that what western sources are saying isn't consistent with what's going on there. Also, I said Bibi would get a Nobel peace prize. I don't decide who wins those things (Obama got one and I think it was obviously political and kinda bogus). I said it'd have to be the UN running the program (to be somewhat analogous to the China situation) should have made that explicit, I'm obviously not a professional writer. I will edit the comment to make it clearer. Look at the Republican senators and Congress people most interested in passing laws against Xinjiang and China overall. They're the same people that say Gaza should be turned into a parking lot and that we should have surveillance at mosques in America. Do you think they care about how Muslims in other countries are treated? They support forced labor in our prisons, do you think they care about forced labor in other countries? HRW is 99 percent funded by western donors (mostly wealthy anti communists, governments or other anti communist foundations named after American oligarchs for example Ford foundation, MacArthur foundation, Rockefeller fund) In his lifetime, The founder of amnesty international was worried the British government had infiltrated his organization's governance when it didn't publish a report on British colonial activities in the mid east. Human rights watch and amnesty international are political organizations. They tell the truth and do genuinely good work most of the time so that they can lie when it really matters to the US or UK governments. I could go back and forth on this all week but I think it would have limited value to either of us and I really don't want to upset you or anyone else too much. There's not much either of us can do anyways no matter what the truth is. Just notice when Europe and America completely drop this narrative about Xinjiang. The internet is making the world a truly global community and the truth will be too bright to blot out pretty soon. Likely within the decade.

Payton McDermott

Matt is clearly not aware that old people are wildly horny.

Christian Hunt

China's abuses (torture, rape sterilization, destruction of mosques, concentration camps, killings, reprisals) have been extensively documented and are easily available with a simple web search, not just by western governments, but also the UN and international human rights orgs like amnesty international and human rights watch. The information is all there, you just don't want to see because you have decided a priori that it's "lies". Instead you believe a fairy tale from the Chinese security state, believing all sorts of nonsense, none of which can be verified because the Chinese state doesn't allow journalism. And you absolutely lauded Xinjiang as a model for Gaza. Not really worth arguing since it's right there in the thread. Your denial of obvious facts says a lot about your relationship with the truth.

Henry George

I love how schizoid Maoist "theory" is.

Christian Hunt

interesting that you think the vulture story came out of palmer's camp. it does seem like she's trying really hard to align herself with the victims when i think an honest look at the situation reveals she's complicit at best

a.j. archer

Henry, I keep asking you for examples of the things you're talking about (particularly murder) and you have none. I also never said I wanted Israel to do this to Palestinians. I went through the hypothetical and said a little about why it's not applicable. That's not the way I hope that situation gets resolved. I hope there is a one state solution with equal rights and apartheid is abolished and everyone can live in peace. That seems like the only possibility that hasn't been completely forclosed. I said "if" Israel did what China was doing, the same institutions that lie about what's actually happening in Gaza would celebrate it while still condemning China. If you think the media is lying about the genocide in Gaza covering for Israel and US complicity, why would you expect them to tell the truth about a genocide in China? There's a good discussion on what's happening in Xinjiang here, It's bookmarked so you can skip to the part on Xinjiang if you want. https://youtu.be/JCoGBBdpqNU?si=1PRSkxGAju4FpWaf.

Payton McDermott

Highly relate to the Matt bit where he says being so far left makes it easy to get along with both casual Republicans and Democrats since they’re closer to each other than they are to you and you’re in the minority no matter what

Josh B

Can attest to the fact that my boutique/inscrutable left-wing politics actually make it easier to deal with my rural, working class right wing relatives. Many a time have I headed off an anti-abortion tirade with the “the legal strategy is specifically harmful, ineffective, and runs the risk of criminalizing treatments for miscarriages” line

Sarah

Payton, you're literally an apologist for ethnic cleansing committed by the Chinese. You're literally repeating Chinese talking points about why forced relocation, the concentration camps, forced sterilization, the elimination of language and all cultural artifacts, pervasive surveillance, etc, is all necessary and justifiable and, in fact, good. The few acts of violence you aren't explicitly defending, you're defending implicitly by pretending they haven't happened and aren't widely documented for decades. You aren't merely saying "there's a double standard in the USA when it comes to violence", you're saying "what China is doing is good and I hope that Israel imposes similar policies against the Palestinians".

Henry George

They've got plenty of differences but they share the history of European colonialism. They're both European settler colonies, that's the only similarity I've mentioned. In fact we've even got a lot of American settlers that have moved to Israel to be on the front lines. Maybe that's what youre hung up on, you think European ways of thinking and behaving are all that exist. I know I thought similar things in the past myself

Payton McDermott

Guys, the bare naked ladies are not within the Goth-Burlesque-Steampunk dark triad. So much of what you list is dead-on-balls accurate but that take is a huge whiff. I don't particularly like BNL, but they are a mass market phenomenon with broad cross cultural appeal across many age groups. BNL is on the boring side of conventional: cat owners, librarians, low ranking Federal employees, Canadians. Even a casual survey of your audience is going to turn up a solid percentage that will rep at least one BNL hit. Way off, folks.

Henry George

The U.S. and Israel are very different countries with very different histories. I don't know why you're pretending they're the same other than just being ignorant.

Otto Laakso

Clearly not. China doesn't run Israel, these are two very different countries with very different histories. Idk why you're pretending they're the same other than just being ignorant.

Payton McDermott

Israel had Palestinians under martial law from 1948-1966, built them schools where they were "deradicalized" and "integrated" into Israeli society (aka went through zionist indoctrination). Do you think Israel deserves a peace prize for this?

Otto Laakso

That's what I keep asking you. What murders? In the case of the US or Israel there are well documented mass murder, pogroms, germ warfare, all kinds of things. Where's the equivalent for Xinjiang? The dynamic is completely different between being a settler colony taking more and more land and being a province of China for hundreds of years being integrated into modern China. I really don't expect my words will be able to reach you. The lies are so prevalent, so constantly repeated, with such certainty but the evidence is lacking. Much of it comes from Christian conservative groups and uyghur separatists that leave and cash out on being propagandists for FDD or other government funded think tanks

Payton McDermott

Everything you are saying in defense of China you could say about the USA. Tribes committed acts of terrorism against the US and it's people. USA responded by bringing the tribes modernization, rail, education, etc. With minor adjustments everything you are saying could be said by the proponents of manifest destiny a 150 years especially since you both conveniently omit the routine use of rape, torture, killings and reprisals in your myth making.

Henry George

If the Israelis had done in Gaza what the Chinese did in Xinjiang instead of what they've been doing for 75 years, Bibi would get a Nobel peace prize (not from me, they don't ask my opinion on those awards). The Israelis have proven themselves to be bad faith actors so I think it'd have to be the UN running the program (for it to be somewhat analogous to what's happened in China, even then China and Israel have completely different histories so it's still not really analogous. For instance Israel is an apartheid state and China is not).

Payton McDermott

Do you think Israelis should build deradicalization centers for Palestinians

Otto Laakso

Again, define ethnic cleansing. What exactly are the Chinese doing? What I can say for certain is there are no mass killings, no death marches no wide scale abuse. There was a series of terror attacks in Xinjiang in the late 00s and early 10s. Xinjiang was not well integrated into wider china. Formal public education wasnt well organized and public services were lacking. The government responded by building compulsory education and deradicalization centers for adults. More infrastructure like high speed rail, electrification and internet. Better public schools for children. As well as increasing surveillance and police capabilities. The "forced labor" allegations seem to refer to people being assigned jobs, in which they are paid the same wages as han workers, after they leave the deradicalization centers. But I'm terms of ethnic cleansing, I haven't seen evidence of mass murder or people being forced onto reservations. Israel is also an apartheid state so the situation is very different

Payton McDermott

Yes, the US has historically engaged in ethnic cleansing and genocide, including against the indigenous populations of the USA. How does that make China's ongoing campaign of ethnic cieansing against the Uighurs a "lie"? Please explain.

Henry George

What if there was a book about a wholly Good Man, a Good Book if you will.

andrew

Depends on the president but we've always got at least a few wars going on. Once you realize that's not normal by international standards, the lies that justify that behavior are easier to see. Gulf of Tonkin "incident" being an obvious one that's not really disputed by anyone now that it's not useful to keep lying.

Payton McDermott

Hear me out...Greenland...the population supports independence from Denmark who they view as colonizers. They expressed (through their PM (a native)) that they are not for sale, but they wish to forge stronger ties with their Inuit brethren in the US and Canada. The US has been attempting to get Greenland since 1876. Biggest advocate was Seward. Yes, that Seward. It's 46% larger than Alaska. Same size as the Louisiana purchase. When Germany invaded Denmark during WWII, the US preemptively took Greenland. After the war, we straight up refused to leave. We're still there. If you might be leaving NATO, then Greenland become even more important. Opening of polar shipping routes and mining. He's dead serious. And it's not insane. Not saying I endorse the policy, but I would not dismiss it as insanity.

Christopher McCann

Define what you mean by "ethnic cleansing". If you used that phrase to describe what's happening in Gaza, I wouldn't ask for clarification.

Payton McDermott

How did you find out about the genocides and barbarisms of U.S. presidents?

Otto Laakso

Olive oil on ice cream is very good. But you need high quality EVOO and high fat (real) vanilla ice cream (Kirkland signature).

Christopher McCann

Colombia/Petro caved in just a few hours though. He crashed out with a word salad screed and then completely surrendered to Trump.

TC

If Matt wants to read novels where the main character is simply good and the author doesn't entertain any shades of gray when it comes to morality, I'd recommend the works of this writer called Ayn Rand

Otto Laakso

I'm surprised you weren't a Sandman fan Liz, one would think there'd be crossover from an appreciator of the Loeb/Sale Batman stories. The Dark Knight even has a cameo!

TC

You are claiming that the ongoing modern ethnic cleansing campaign waged against the Uighurs is a "lie"? Total denial.

Henry George

i met Neil Gaiman in Scotland around that time at a talk, still have a pic somewhere. I was a big fan of Coraline (the book) as a kid. He showed me a photo of their baby, no further contact thank god lol. Makes me feel gross!

haz

Man the whole Momala thing always bugged the shit out of me. Like, Cole Emhoff was *20* when his dad married Kamala, are we meant to think he went around his college dorm telling everyone he had a new mom? Anything that happens teens or above is obviously "dad's wife" territory, especially when their actual mother was alive and in the same city.

Ian H

Gotta be talking about Leighton Vander Esch here

Ian H

Almost anything you've probably heard about Xinjiang or the uyghurs. What exactly happened in tiananmen square in 1989. The near constant hype that the Chinese economy is doing terribly. No matter what year it is the media will always say the Chinese economy was doing better sometime in the past and is bad now. Chinese technology "theft". Then there's the more vague ones that are hard to quantify, Chinese people are some kind of hive mind sitting around waiting for the government to tell them what to do, individual leaders are the only people with power, China "stole" our jobs, etc, etc. The scale of the lies is immense and utterly shameless.

Payton McDermott

Dr. Gundry, the olive oil guy, is one of my favorite dumb nutrition guys. Pretty sure he also advocates for smoking because nicotine has some beneficial properties. Also doesn’t think you should eat grapes.

Orb

Ok a liter of olive oil per week for a household, doesn't seem crazy to me. We do about 0.75 L per week but we only have 1 toddler. But I'm italian so ymmv

Gina Calabrese

How much does Matt charge to have listeners give him their log in information and have Matt re-program their tiktok algo so it shows them the stuff he sees? (this is only half a joke)

Martin Ross

“Every white middle linebacker is some kind of Einstein” = real guffaw

Folks,,

It is weird how The Resistance just doesn't really exist this time around, except abroad. It feels like it's full force in Europe and now in South America thanks to Colombia. Maybe it's because Trump ran on tariffs this time, but they seems to have the "we're not gonna take it" energy that just doesn't exist here. Heck, look at that tweet from Hakeem Jeffries and then look at what the president of Colombia is tweeting.

Tim Masterson

“Gentleman’s comic book writer” about Neil Gaiman killed me.

Jacob

What are some of the lies we've been told?

TC

My brain registered Malcolm Harris as Malcolm Gladwell for like 10 minutes and it made that anecdote even funnier lol

TC

I can't find an original source on this, but Charles Barkley used to be a republican. He has a funny quote on the topic "I was asked for years about being a Republican, probably because most black people are Democrats. My mother heard it once and called me and said ‘Charles, Republicans are for the rich people.’ And I said, ‘Mom, I’m rich.’"

Ben

Would love to hear takes on this piece on Amanda Palmer. Also, Gaiman is supposed to be the hand picked guy to finish a song of ice and fire when Martin dies, so say goodbye to the bag creep. https://www.newyorker.com/culture/culture-desk/amanda-palmers-accidental-experiment-with-real-communism

Brian Rad

Haven't finished the episode yet but Liz, we've been indoctrinated to hate China for a long time based on a lot of lies. Bad things have certainly happened in China however, I think if we compared the crimes of China to the crimes of Europe or America there really is no comparison. Our education airbrushes the genocides and barbarism of our presidents while exaggerating the crimes of "adversarial" governments.

Payton McDermott

All YA authors need to go straight to jail.

Bud Light

We're getting Red Scare-length episodes lately! Keep it up!
