Yeah I didn't think about it earlier, but whatever wholesale purveyor they're spending that grant money with, Sysco or it's regional equivalent probably, definitely sells pre-cut fresh fruit. I kinda think the poor nameless bureaucrat Gluesenkamp-Perez is mocking was right, that the daycare owner or manager simply didn't want to deal with the expense, chance of spoilage, refrigeration, labor etc. that fresh fruit necessitated and fudged the rule to get the employee to stop asking, never suspecting it would send their Representative on a Veep-like quest to Make This A Thing.

I liked that she said her proposed legislation would support the viability of small farms in her community because 1) I don’t think they have banana farms in Washington state 2) the regulation she took issue with apparently did not prevent bananas from reaching the daycare anyway.
As far as the regulation she referred to, it must be either state or local, because there is nothing in the federal legislation she is proposing amendments to—the Childcare Block Grant—about food prep. And to your point about the reason food prep regulations exist, her amendment to this piece of federal legislation reads “the State shall not create any barriers on the simple preparation of fresh fruits and vegetables.” Her amendment gives a definition of what “simple preparation” might include, but doesn’t list any exclusions; one can easily imagine someone arguing cooking is simple prep.

Yeah, a few things don't add up about her claims too. Like, I've been a restaurant cook for 17 years and I've never seen a kitchen with *7* sinks. There's usually only 3, one for handwashing, one for prep tasks and a 3-basin for dishes. Also, how does the supposed peeling ban prevent them from just handing the kids a fruit and letting them handle it? My two-year-old does just fine with whole mandarin oranges, apples, and bananas. I also kinda question how misguided the policy really is. Like, sure, just opening a banana or orange peel with your hands is one thing, but what about taking a peeler to an apple, or cutting up a melon? At that point you pretty substantially *are* doing food prep, and the consequences of failing to properly sanitize those RTE food-contact utensils (because none of these educators have food handlers or ServSafe Manager licenses) could be pretty dire.

Matt’s take on the antitrust people couldn’t have been more apropros to this video. Great, you identified a slightly flawed piece of policy. But it reaches a pitch of absurdity when she starts claiming this is going to have huge transformative effects on children’s health and “the viability of small farms”

Re: illegal immigration there is just a type of person who is (selectively) incensed at the idea of rule breaking even absent negative consequences. "The law is the law" etc with no thought to whether strict enforcement of every law in every situation is wise

Also, I'm curious what you think about how to best present the combo of welfare state + strong labor movement to the electorate. From a "vibes based" perspective, those two seem like oil and water. Strong labor movement with its spirit of personal responsibility and hard work, and on the other hand welfare state being derided by the right as handouts for the lazy. Is there a single encompassing vibe that can elegantly package all three of the left-pop pillars?

Regarding the question of who the next democrat candidate and standard bearer should be. How about Shawn Fain?? I think he clearly has the cultural cachet to appeal as a populist. He can easily bring home two of Matt’s three left populist pillars: strong labor movement and wage compression. Feasibly could get behind welfare state too but admittedly harder to imagine. Maybe a surrogate (AOC?) could shoulder that messaging.

I think another part of the problem for Shor/Yglesias/etc. is that winning elections is the *only* stated motivation for their policy preferences. Leftists argue that left policies like expanded child welfare, ending wars, or building labor power are electorally popular, but also that they're just morally good, helpful interventions into people's lives whether they win elections or not. The "popularist" types position themselves as hard-headed pragmatists who care about winning above all else, so when they eat shit it's especially devastating.

lol at the extremely long silence as Liz decides whether Jen Psaki is hot.
When I was in law school in DC, she lived in the same building as me. Saw her name on packages in the package room, then later saw her on TV as Obama’s state dept spokesperson. Then matched her face up with the lady I would always pass in the hallway.

Matt, on the theodicy debate strategy - why would your opponent concede the existence of God? Just because it’s Texas and they sincerely felt that way? I would think the right answer to “is there a God?” In that context is just to say it’s unknowable.

Can’t agree with this more. I started listening during Covid lockdown April 2020; going back over the primary while it was fresh and hearing the policy takes/args felt like putting glasses on my brain. I was also 26 then and am 30 now and the pod has made me a much happier (less neurotic) person and probably a better one.

Really huge ep
I’ve been idly listening to past episodes in reverse chronological order for a bit now and I just made it back to when Matt first really shared the FFP in 2019. I basically just finished listening to you guys talk through the 2020 primaries as they happened & it was kind of surreal
And now I find myself in a weird flashback to the last time shit felt like this (for me), I feel like I feel compelled by anything at all for the first time since biden’s super tuesday
This election happens and I don’t know if it’s just me, but it felt different to hear you guys talk about policy and the cultural state of politics in a more concerted way than you have in a while, and I really really appreciated it
Call it maladaptive or parasocial but you guys have helped me so much over the last several years as I’ve navigated my mid to late 20s
I really appreciate the pod and I hope you don’t stop it anytime soon, and I hope Matt gets some seat of power one day, and I appreciate Liz being a primary source of any faith in modern journalism
I’m just a little crossfaded right now and felt like it was worth going out of my way to be earnest
