Gang back.

I think the 2-3-2 guy was implicitly saying that for baseball, they run out of players who don't need rest fast and the whole team generally gets mentally tired by the third game (and also the managers have to spread out people more to cover all three and so they're weaker in all three games). And so you lose some of your home game advantage that you already have less of vs the team with the opportunity for 4 of them with more restfulness.

Time to put on pajamas, brush teeth, we do this every night. If we can accomplish this in 20 minutes it is a victory.

Matt you should just go full force in your dad interactions. If you find yourself in another situation in which you could do down a math rabbit hole, but you’re hesitant to, just go for it. They would probably find it endearing or at least respect where you’re coming from.

You are right that overweight individuals who eat healthy and exercise regularly have similar health outcomes to non obese people, and that is ultimately the health saving intervention, not weight loss in and of itself. Glp-1’s are a tool that can help people with that first part, especially given that many people struggle with overconsumption. I’m not going to quibble with your first point, medicine is practiced on an individual level, and number needed to treat ultimately means that for some people an intervention may not be effective but can have an impact at the population level

The problem with this line of thinking is two-fold: one, obesity may be *associated* with various comorbidities, but we can’t say definitively with the available evidence that it *is causing* them. And two, people considered overweight or obese essentially have similar health outcomes to people of “normal” weight if those people are eating right and exercising regularly, even if they remain overweight or obese in the presence of those interventions.
If we want people to be healthier, we ought to prioritize interventions we know actually work, not just try to shrink people’s bodies using a drug that hasn’t been studied long term, that has major side effects, and that people would need to take every day for the rest of their lives just to wind up, on average, like 10-20% lighter than they started out.

Missed opportunity to bring in the Catholic faith angle which drives a lot of Mazzulla’s commentary. Would have enjoyed Liz’s take.

Additional excellent lines from the Mazzulla interview:
“We’re either gonna win or we’re not, and 40 years from now, none of you are invited to my funeral and that’s it.”
“A Boston media member or somebody expecting me to win, they don’t have a weapon. They’re not gonna come after me if we don’t win.”
“They’re saying words. So like, they don’t mean anything. They’re just words. You’re just saying them because you have to say them. You’re contractually obligated to write a 500-word article after.”

The thing about ozempic is that there might be a so-far undiscovered increased risk of something like stomach cancer, but obesity is associated with so many negative health outcomes that it may still be a net benefit. I think people focus too much on weight loss as a purely aesthetic activity and not a life-prolonging intervention.
That being said, glp-1’s may turn out to be bad who the fuck knows

Matt, consider a “soft starter” before telling a group of dudes your sports take. Something like “I’m a little odd, when I think about home playoff set up, my mind goes to…” This creates an illusion of self awareness others might appreciate.

The playoff system was perfect from 1995-2011. The second wild card and the Astros moving to the AL was the beginning of the end.

Has Matt been exposed to the arg that it’s “unfair” for the top 2 seeds in each MLB league to get a bye because it prevents them from “getting in rhythm” or causes their “bats to go cold”?

I had the same thought. And say a team has a massive home field advantage, so with three games in a row at home they could win all three and then take that “momentum” which I think is a real thing into the home stretch at the higher seeded team’s stadium. Even if none of that stuff is real, I bet teams think it is and value it

Is the outcome of one World Series game really independent of the others? Seems like there’s a decent arg that it wouldn’t be, given that playing your top starting pitcher (and marginally increasing your prob of a win) will mean you can’t play them again for the next few games. Genuinely don’t know enough about baseball to say, but this is a question that could be answered empirically.

Sorry for so many comments but I think of these as I go through the episode:
I really didn’t think the 2-3-2 playoff format issue was going the direction it did. I thought the complaint would be that the lower seeded team with only three home games gets their three home games before the higher seeded team gets four. So really through five games, the lower seeded team gets the advantage. Not until 6 games have they each had the same advantage, and not until the SEVENTH game (if necessary) has the higher seeded team gotten their full allotment of “homefield advantage.”
But then if you do it any other way it’s tough to get the “better” team three home games before the other has three, and also give the “better” team the home advantage for game 7 (which seems to be desired in these different formats). Really interesting to think about those dynamics!
I’d love to see a 1-1-1-1-1-1-1 format lol
