if your instinct is to automatically resist when someone (your kids) make demands of you, you might want to look into this concept called PDA ("Pathological Demand Avoidance" or "Persistent Drive for Autonomy"). It's closely associated with people in the neurodivergent category (including autism). It is often misread as children being willful, and then punished, but it's not people just being obstinate or difficult. It arises from an anxiety response.

JohnG

I used to purposely walk my kids down the candy and toy aisles at the supermarket just so I could say no when they asked for stuff.

Tim Masterson

i have been in one before and been very happy with it in another state, it’s specifically GW which seems poorly run on the admin side and overstretched for providers

haz

then again my husband and i are both in matt’s “whining makes me want to give it to you less” camp by nature so i appreciate that this is harder for many than it is for either of us

Sarah

liz. you gotta be strong. the whining will drastically reduce if you’re both saying no!! love to give my kid a warm and cheerful, “nope! love you!” and then walk away from him

Sarah

Okay tbh i know you guys don’t owe me anything but I’m a longtime fan/admirer of yours, I also have Tamil heritage, and my feelings are hurt by the Kamala mispronunciation bit. I don’t understand the resistance because her name isn’t a heavy lift.

Monica

As a black man, I give Matt “the pass” to write said piece and if anyone gets mad, he can call them racist and say they’re silencing Black (capital B) voices

A.

I don't know anything about GW medicine since I don't believe I know anyone in that system (at least not anyone I've discussed health care with) but my parents are in a university health system and their experiences seem better than mine. Not sure if that would even translate to university systems more broadly.

Bourbachi

I'm not going to bully anyone about it, but I really don't get it. Don't see the humor in mispronouncing a name if the mispronunciation is not itself a funny word or phrase.

Kaiser mid-Atlantic is not the same as it was 10 years ago. They have a huge staffing shortage right now so it can take FOREVER to book an appointment. (I injured my knee in February, and with 6 or so weeks between every step from primary care doc, x-ray, MRI, orthopedist, etc. I think it was August before I finally started PT, and then it's like a month between PT appointments - and that's all mid-Atlantic PT locations). I also wanted a skin cancer screening for several good reasons and I had to go through all this rigamarole, sending in high quality photographs of my skin from different angles for review, before they would consider letting me see a dermatologist. And they laid off a mass of their receptionists so if you need to book an appointment directly with a speciality office that can be a black hole. The infuriating thing is that they are still trying to recruit new "members" (patients). On the plus side, though, they pay the doctors very well and the doctors are mostly terrific (so I don't even have the desire to shop around like I did before), MRIs and other things are pretty cheap (I was hospitalized and was surprised at how low the bill was), and they also stick fairly strictly to their schedule so I usually get called in at the exact time. Another thing I *don't* like, though, is it's impossible to call anyone directly - you basically can just call member services. So if you have a concern it is either a 911 emergency, or you are sending a message that could take days for response. If you want to, e.g., ask your doctor about a reaction to a new medication and need the response fairly quickly, that can be a problem. Another example: after successfully getting my dermatology appointment, I had cryotherapy on a growth on my face, and the next day (Wednesday) my eye was swollen shut. I wanted to know what I should do about that, if anything, so I sent a message that morning and didn't get a response until this afternoon (Friday).

sufjan stevens - the only thing

Veronica

that's so sweet, thank you so much! i hope you enjoy the book!

The Bruenigs

i’m genuinely gonna look into switching to Kaiser…I was going to GW Medicine and the final straw for me was when the gynecologist had me change into a paper gown and then left me basically naked alone in the exam room for 40 minutes. I don’t trust their administration at all, so the idea of an organized all in one shop sounds amazing

Two things about youth soccer at that level: 1. In North Jersey, there's one town at the high school level who is the usually the best team. They send players to UCLA and whatnot. At the rec level, we would sometimes beat them. This is because, even at eight years old, the parents would put the best players on club teams that would travel around the region. 2. We had a "can't win by more than six goals" rule for youth rec soccer, which lead to similar games. It also lead situations where a team would be up, 6-0, and pull back all their best players, and then give up a goal and then the coaches would put all their best players back up front to make it 7-1 right away.

Tim Masterson

what's the two songs at the end?

AR

I really don't understand how anything you've written is responsive to what I wrote.

Terence Smith

I'm not sure the "corporate true crime" is not systematic. Surely any system is going to have rules and those rules will get broken and need enforcing. Publicizing enforcement or shaming bad actors seems like a necessary but not sufficient way to deter breaking the rules of the system.

Ben

My impression is that playing keep-away in soccer is less about going easy on the other side and more about compounding their humiliation and not giving them the solace of getting even a single goal back. Good ep.

andrew

I am still baffled that the haters even exist frankly

John

So I don't know how universal that experience is but it's not healthy to lose weight that quickly

John

I lost 50 lb in 2 months when I quit drinking. I was 30 years old and it absolutely fucked up my endocrine system so bad for like half a year. I almost got put on testosterone replacement but thankfully things normalized

John

Legitimately, what does a standard John Bolton Republican get out of listening to this podcast? None of us here want to die in Iran so that Israel can kill more Palestinians!

Josh B

And Obamaworld within the bureaucracy is compromised by Iran, they are absolutely anti-Israel.

TC

Adjust your framing: I'm not blanket anti-war (you aren't either; nobody is, when it comes down to it)

TC

Matt’s point about punishment and its capacity to ruin relationships rather than extract concessions reminds me of how US political parties treat their constituent groups. In an era of negative polarization, it seems like the parties think they can browbeat their voters into supporting them out of fear of the other party without alienating anyone.

Josh B

Ugh. Dems so fucking stupid. You need a thing to rally people around. Bernie - Medicare for all. Trump - immigration. Kamala...?

Christopher McCann

That the NYT, MSM in general, or the fucking State Department are insufficiently pro-Israel is an absolutely insane thing to believe. Invoking WMD is especially ludicrous when it is pro-Israel partisans who are the ones pushing for a new US war!

Josh B

The same NYT that pushed WMD? Why should anyone ever believe anything that rag prints. How convenient they don't want to publish any conclusive evidence. They've been a mouthpiece for the anti-Israel faction of the State Department for a year now.

TC

oh, and: ep 2 good. as ever. ep fire. ty!

M

hahahaha. pretty good! <3

M

the combo of one of the most devastating (and one of my favorite) songs w/ Matt’s disintegration in anticipation of Reddit humor is exquisite. nice to hear you two again. ty for the content. love you both 4 real. (PS: Liz, your foreword in Rensin’s book rocks—lovely prose and color to frame the text and hook a reader. seems like what a foreword ought to be. read it a few days ago when I picked the book up. excited to get into the text more. thanks for the rec.)

M

Worth noting that the Gaza report was a little weird - it was written as an opinion piece by one of the doctors rather than a report from the news side of the paper. There was presumably huge amounts of fact checking but it's a weird format for things like statements around the further evidence they're not directly including, which might be very natural to reference in a straight news story.

Terence Smith

o^8*?8*@' die

Ian Laue

ignore all haters liz, but do give thought to my feedback/input (im different)

Ivan McGillicuddy

Taylor Borie
