Matt, what do you think of dual interest rates? The idea would be that for certain, economically key sectors (e.g. green energy), the government sets (by law/fiat) a lower interest rate, and that for certain non productive sectors (like speculative finance) the government sets a higher interest rate to reduce the risk of financial instability?

2024-09-15 01:18:12 +0000 UTCTopic: SOCIAL WEALTH FUNDS I loved hearing Matt's spirited 'oration' in the last episode on the way a SWF would eventually transfer ownership away from the rich and into the commons. I've read the PPP proposal, in particular the section about Ownership rights. But I'm still wondering about the following: 1) "Ownership" (via equity) does not equate to "effective control". So how do we (the People) get the latter from the former? 2) Relatedly, why wouldn't the majority shareholders erect a line of defense (how exactly? not my expertise) against an SWF's "intrusion" in the firm, thus preventing "effective control"? THANKS!

He has nothing to lose by doing so after the election and, if Trump wins, we know the Federal machinery of death will be put into motion. I think Biden believes it is the right thing to do. Can you guys kick this off? Is this just a crazy idea with no possibility of success?

2024-09-13 07:47:18 +0000 UTCHave you heard of politics, the news, politicians, influencers, elections, party conventions, think tanks, common sense, etc? These are institutions, actors, rituals and concepts that the elite of society use to present their interests as the interests of society. The comprehensive scope of explanation is civil society which in the current day means your entire life. The afterlife doesn't matter to the liberal religion because you can't take natural resources from there. To recap: Tradition/ritual - party conventions, election day, political campaigns Sources of authority - media (it's literally in the NAME! It mediates all of our interactions with anything we don't physically interact with) politicians, influencers, credentialed people, "experts"
Payton McDermott
2024-09-12 21:45:58 +0000 UTC"things you individually believe but cannot prove" are not the same schema as "religion." there's not a comprehensive scope of explanation for (the universe, afterlife, etc.), there's no tradition of shared ceremony/ritual with a group of believers over time, there's no structure or institution or source of authority to reinterpret the metanarratives, etc.

2024-09-12 19:41:20 +0000 UTCMatt and Liz: While Liz whittles away her remaining feminist credentials by crafting overly fussy, too-cute baked goods and engaging in other domestic frivolities, Matt continues to bank solid points as a female ally by providing stellar parental care. Could you comment on what it’s like to be in an 'inverted' relationship where the male is the stronger advocate for women’s causes? 2024-09-12 00:30:11 +0000 UTCGreat question! Coasian and "law and economics" type analyses are far too dominant in legal writing (such as cases) that offer policy justifications whereas Rawlsian and egalitarian type analyses are not common enough. I recommend Llewelyn as a good primer for insights as a practitioner. Like Josh, I am super curious who to read (other than Matt, of course) with modern insights in this area.

2024-09-11 08:28:01 +0000 UTCHi Sarah, I appreciated your "just do it" daytime activity advice around 18 months ago. And yeah, I'm the morning parent most days and we've been going to library storytime pretty religiously for over a year. My wife has also started making friends with a neighbor with a younger kid, they've been going over there regularly for a few months, and we try to hit kid events (toddler music in the park, free museum day, etc) whenever they come up. I still feel like some amount of preschool is the way to go, but the consensus "affordable option" here in exurban PA is $720/mo., so that puts a heavy thumb on the scale of "1yr vs 2yrs" and "part-time vs full-time" questions.
Ian H
2024-09-11 03:28:54 +0000 UTCcould she do part time? ad hoc play group? or just get into a really consistent groove of like attending the library at the same time every day so she’s encountering the same kids frequently? i’m an ECE teacher and in my experience the socialization aspect of daycare/preschool is the main reason to do it…but those opportunities exist outside of formal care also, especially if you work at it a bit and meet parents of similar aged kids
Sarah
2024-09-11 03:07:39 +0000 UTCalso have two kids and two things that have helped me are 1) toy rotation so most of the clutter is in under-bed storage bins and i periodically refresh what’s out. i think the optimal number of toys for engagement is like 14 or something 2) i do not fold kid clothes. shirts go in one drawer, pants in another, etc. still feels like we’re drowning in laundry at all times but at least the folding step is faster this way
Sarah
2024-09-11 03:02:44 +0000 UTCi think autists are often very skilled at doing on the fly behavioral analysis BECAUSE they don’t intuit social cues, and a lot of parenting is doing exactly that—trying to figure out why the fuck your kids are doing whatever it is they’re doing. it helps that kids tend to be more overt with their cues but kids are also not always insightful about the cause of their behavior (insisting and really believing they aren’t tired while visibly melting down for example) so you do have to do a lot of analyzing to address whatever the real problem is.

2024-09-10 21:08:55 +0000 UTCMatt and Liz, I would love either a debunking/response to the stereotypical arguments about “why socialism never works” or a riff on what you both would feel like living in that society would be like. Not really a question in formatting but it is in spirit!

2024-09-10 20:14:50 +0000 UTCWill Matt add a new Patreon tier called "Matt's Masterclass" where he provides some kind of seminar on one of his pet topics, where he fully explains everything about it with no worries of time constraints or trying to get to other topics. He could do 1 a month or 6 a year, whatever isn't too onerous, or even sell them a la carte and doing them as the mood strikes him? I would jump to this tier immediately. Topics I'd like to see: the functioning soviet system, how it all worked, day to day, the functional structure of it. the general theories of Rudolf Hilferding, who I believe Matt has said is an inspiration a general economics course from a Matt perspective. a full explanation and theory of Sovereign Wealth Funds (including their potential to use markets to create collective ownership) what is Matt's relationship to John Rawls? Is this an inspirational figure of some kind or is this a long-time troll thing? ---- there are more, but I don't want to ramble.
JohnG
2024-09-10 19:36:41 +0000 UTCMatt and Liz: Matt has often been described as gifted, headstrong, autodidactic, competitive, and deeply preoccupied with justice from a young age. While these qualities illustrate his strengths, it sounds like they also created a volatile mix that sometimes led to conflicts with teachers and authority figures. From what you’ve shared, it seems Jane may have inherited some of these traits to varying degrees. In your experience, has Jane developed adversarial relationships with any of her instructors due to these characteristics? If so, how have you approached navigating this dynamic—both in supporting her and managing the relationships with her educators?

2024-09-10 16:23:42 +0000 UTCThanks Chiara, I'm definitely not dismissing preschool out of hand, but in my area the benefits are balanced against significant expense, like high hundreds-over a thousand dollars a month. There are free and reduced programs but you need to be significantly impoverished to qualify, and spots are limited. Once the kids are five there is universal free kindergarten through the public school system.

Chiara Rohz
2024-09-10 07:24:54 +0000 UTCLiz- how do you picture heaven or an afterlife? As an atheist I find it both fascinating and almost incongruous to imagine you being fully on board with the dogma of catholicism- having been raised in a Catholic country and living here most of my life (ireland) I find it challenging sometimes to imagine you believing in Transubstantiation or Virgin pregnancy of a 13 or 14 year old. I enjoy the ritual and mysticism of Catholicism, but more from an anthropological viewpoint- as in look at all these rites and rituals from ancient times, aren't they interesting as relics from a distant past, rather than this is all real and relevant. Three more questions- why no women priests in this day and age? Total limitation on women's influence in the church. Do you think that the concentration of sexual abuse in the church is something intrinsic to Catholicism and if so why? See most recent report in Ireland from last week- prolific rape of children in almost every religious educational setting in the country. Or is it about an institution run exclusively by men? Or is it celibacy or using the church as a refuge for gay people or what is the deal? It's just too prevalent to say ah that was the olden times, or whatever(I've read your past writing on this topic!)Finally why does the Catholic Church take on an adopt pagan traditions in the countries where it established itself- if these are not original church doctrine etc how can they take on legitimacy in the eyes of the church- see St Brigids day or certain celebrations like that. Like they dont come from the Catholic god- so bar getting natives on side and interested in the church, does Catholicism imagine it can 'make' pagan rites or traditions legit by adopting them? Thanks and love you guys!

2024-09-09 23:11:41 +0000 UTCWhat does Matt think about arguments that justify inequality with meritocracy? Usually someone will mention something about a doctor refusing to work for anything less than €100,000 per year because their high income is meritocratic. My response is usually to point to inheritances, which are much more common and much less to do with meritocracy. To my mind, inheritances have a way bigger impact on inequality and are way less democratic than doing well in school. Where else does the meritocracy argument fall flat?

2024-09-09 23:10:41 +0000 UTCMatt, why do you think negative/counterplan fiat should be allowed to operate in “multiple worlds?” In the discussion on Liz’s anti-natalism debate you made that argument and said it was well established in the rules but that’s not true across debate formats and rules voters are weaker than Fairness and Education voters. Matt: curious to hear your thoughts on affordable housing policy, particularly given that the discourse seemingly only focuses on supply side solutions and doesn't account for predatory / bad landlord practices. 2024-09-09 21:01:30 +0000 UTCFor Matt: What do you think of Australia’s Right to Disconnect law? And did Kevin O’Leary commit a ULP for saying he would fire staff who didn’t respond to his calls after hours?

2024-09-09 21:00:17 +0000 UTCFor: Matt Re: SWF USA On a prior ep there was a mention of how one of the Nordic SWFs used or attempted to use their fund’s shares to influence company policy. Given how much more influential a U.S. SWF could be and the fluctuations in our politics is that a concern?

2024-09-09 20:57:57 +0000 UTCMatt, I’m thinking of hiking the Arizona Trail in October. 800 miles should take a bit over a month. How would you approach something like that. How do I figure out how much food to carry. Etc

2024-09-09 20:57:44 +0000 UTCMatt and Liz, can you explain things people are getting wrong in the discourse this election cycle? For example, immigration discourse just seems so frustratingly dumb. I wonder if you have thoughts on that

2024-09-09 20:56:53 +0000 UTCHi Liz ... I regularly give money to the church I attend. It spends most of the money it receives on its own staff, programs and building upkeep. Should I instead give to a charity that is mostly devoted to things like helping lift people out of poverty? I feel like the answer is yes but ... if the church doesn't get donations, it can't stay open.

2024-09-09 20:56:47 +0000 UTC*On sovereign wealth funds* I am a big fan of the boston Celtics and I am concerned that they are for sale and who the new owner will be. Obviously for political reasons I want them to be acquired by the Real Existing Socialist State of Norway. What kind of owner would the Norwegian sovereign wealth fund be? Would they pay the historic upcoming luxury tax bill to keep this team together and winning championships? Would they cheap out and be like the fenway sports group— shipping off good players and keeping the team bad in the long term but cheap and profitable? What about the saudis

2024-09-09 20:56:07 +0000 UTCLiz: Your reporting on botched executions immediately made me think of Foucault's writing on botched executions in Discipline and Punish and how incompetent barbarism created a scenario "in which the rules were inverted, authority mocked: and criminals transformed into heroes." As a result, crowds gathered to watch executions would - on occasion turn - on the executioner. Did you have the big F man in your head when you were writing, and what do you think of his writing on punishment and state violence generally?

2024-09-09 20:54:34 +0000 UTCLiz+Matt: as a new parent, I think a lot about the Best Stuff to do for my child. But I also suspect that most childhood development advice / science is garbage. Aside from the obvious stuff (don't drop the child, or expose them to lead, have a stable household, etc.), how can you really know what is responsible for healthy / productive / whatever child development if you can't run controlled experiments for the obvious ethical reasons? What is your approach to this literature? Do you think there is a scientifically-informed way to raise a child? If so, what is it?

2024-09-09 20:46:00 +0000 UTCAlso, got a question for Liz on religion/philosophy. Do you think it's possible for anyone to be truly unreligious? Doesn't everyone have stories they've internalized that explain the world and human purpose to themselves? Doesn't the typical atheist just subscribe to liberalism without understanding that's what they're doing? Like they might view morality as being determined by your position in the market, division of labor etc. Thanks!

2024-09-09 20:41:15 +0000 UTCFor Liz: thoughts on the Wade Wilson capital case in light of your recent conversation with Emmett?
