If you walk one block out of the tourist area in Bangkok you can get a real taxi that will use the meter. If you get in a cab and they haggle about the price, just get out at a stop light and get in the cab behind you. Cambodia is a free for all.

Walk down a rice paddy field. Listen to the cicadas. Hike to a small shrine in the forest. Eat lunch at a family-owned diner. Learn how to say "good morning", "excuse me", and "thank you", and people will be excited that you know any Japanese at all.
