2024-02-24 02:53:16 +0000 UTCIt's been a while since I picked up a copy of Plato's Dialogues, but didn't Plato/Socrates think that slavery was just a natural fact of existence? e.g. "slave / free" is a category that is effectively determined, not a matter of choice -- i.e. neither good, nor bad. The poll question just strikes me as a poorly conceived, false-binary regardless of whether it is being asked in the context of the present, the United States in the 1860s or Athens in 400 BC.

One of the constant complaints of slave owners prior to emancipation is that they thought emancipation would turn them into slaves. I'm guessing that most slaves did not think emancipation would turn them into slave owners. Surprisingly, it turns out that there is a third option (don't answer the poll).
