Yo! I'm pretty sure I know Matt's former housemate Rachel. She's worked for Eric Adams for years now, both on his campaign and now for his administration in his food policy office; she's actually a pretty public-facing supporter of him. She's also big into effective altruism now. But apparently she left anarchism behind because she got some shit stolen from her in the house lolol

2024-02-09 18:00:40 +0000 UTCOn “Kenny was in prison for 35 years” - well unfortunately most people nowadays seem to think withholding forgiveness forever, regardless of circumstances, is a cheap and easy way of showing superior virtue to those of us weak marks who will simply forgive someone who did a bad thing “letting them off the hook” or whatever

2024-02-07 23:44:26 +0000 UTCI’d love an ep explaining the rules of competitive debate and how they’re relevant to making args on panels or other settings. I work in policy too and envy your ability to troll your opponents in a professional way like Matt did with his “we should convince bisexual women to raise children with other women” arg

2024-02-07 04:57:41 +0000 UTCI think it speaks to the fact that a lot of people cannot imagine befriending or finding any commonality with someone as "low" as a death row inmate. There's a remove that allows one to think their execution is just.

2024-02-07 02:22:11 +0000 UTCYup. Liz's advocacy is strengthened by her acknowledgement that an inmate's potential innocence isn't the most important factor at the end of the day; they deserve to live regardless. Same principle with whether they've changed over the years or not. Even if they're a depraved p.o.s. from then til now, kiling them is still wrong. Ship of Theseus arg is irrelevant.

2024-02-07 01:53:51 +0000 UTCPeople get very hung up on whether someone on death row has 'changed,' is really a 'great guy,' etc but I don't really see that this has all that much to do with whether they should be executed. To be clear, I believe you or anyone who interacts with someone when you say that they've changed, but even if someone was really an unrepentant piece of shit or really did 'deserve' death, so what? Mercy triumphs over judgment

2024-02-07 01:18:16 +0000 UTCthey'd have had a whole different reaction if they actually thought i brought a weapon in there. i think that would be a crime

2024-02-07 00:20:26 +0000 UTCMatt perfectly navigating a jumbled web of norms and social cues in the middle of a debate only for the other team to completely disregard them is the kind of stuff that keeps me subbed to the pod lmao. great ep, sorry for the L

2024-02-06 21:50:03 +0000 UTCBruh isn't a pen considered a weapon in that context, for self-harm considerations as well? They wouldn't let you use a digital voice recorder or something?

2024-02-06 19:32:22 +0000 UTCI enjoyed the musings on marriage/long term love and the inevitability of change in the people we love. I think about it often in my own relationship with someone I met at 17 (and I am now 25). Staying in love requires a real faith. And not just with our romantic partners, but with friends and family and ourselves. The willingness to keep loving in knowing that nothing of our identities will really stay the same with time is great faith. Not for the faint of heart!!!

2024-02-06 07:09:19 +0000 UTCI’m so envious of you two for getting to meet when so young. My husband and I didn’t meet until the age of 28! At least since then we’ve barely ever had to be apart. 🙃

2024-02-06 06:46:09 +0000 UTCThe thought of Liz storming out fuming after the debate is some of the hardest I've laughed at the show since the Solar Panels saga.
