2023-12-18 16:51:25 +0000 UTCI've seen a lot to contradict the idea that "Native Americans don't get offended" (and I don't believe all the different groups are a single culture either). For example, this was the statement from the boy's group: "Please keep in mind that the decisions made by individuals or families in our community are their own and may not reflect the views of the broader tribal community. As a federally recognized tribe, the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians does not endorse wearing regalia as part of a costume or participating in any other type of cultural appropriation"

2023-12-14 11:49:56 +0000 UTCRight, the word "chief" isn't native, but in this instance it seems to have referred to this mayor's identification with native culture, and his activities with the Boy Scouts, which also drew on that culture. Not that I'm an authority on the guy. I just read the some of the sources cited on his Wikipedia page. Didn't mean to suggest otherwise, much less start an argument.

2023-12-12 16:30:22 +0000 UTCOh buddy they've tried that already. He's impervious to all range of suggestions. I think he may be playing some deeper game yet to be revealed. Like, is he being as loud and unpleasant as possible to drive people off Twitter? Is he trying to prove his worth as a shameless shill on spec to some future Dem employer that he could be a high paid press functionary? Has he just misunderstood the norms and conventions of Twitter arguments, and like the ITYSL Haunted House Guy, think he's doing the right thing even though people clearly don't like it and it doesn't work? Is he a bodhisattva Chan Master demonstrating to us the futility of understand our true nature through words and language? At this point it may be best just to leave him alone. He is the perfect foil for Matt, though.

2023-12-12 07:03:10 +0000 UTCGlad that Jane is wrestling. Seems to make sense for her, plus girls wrestling is getting more popular. Also glad that Matt put all that Stancil nonsense to rest. I tried to write it off as typical partisan econ punditry, where your assessment is kind of just based on whether your guy is president, but it was so shameless and incessant.

2023-12-11 06:30:06 +0000 UTCAs Matt says, a lot of the economy good discourse is usually a front for other arguments like criticizing the economy is bad for Biden/Democrats/center-left policy goals or that things could’ve been worse (like the response to 2008).

2023-12-11 02:41:31 +0000 UTCThe arg is that the inflation of wages has outpaced the inflation of goods, particularly for low wage workers. So, in agregate, workers have more purchasing power than before inflation. Ofc this doesn't take into account welfare cuts which Matt goes into.

2023-12-11 00:52:23 +0000 UTCI don't understand this idea that the economy is great, when everyone is struggling with skyrocketing housing costs and insane grocery prices. Maybe profits are up, so I guess that's a good economy?
