2023-11-21 13:33:57 +0000 UTCTC: Your critical misunderstanding is the idea that the dissolution of Israel would "lead to thousands of deaths more", when the reality is that genocidal apartheid states are the source of the misery, not the solution to it.

2023-11-21 11:06:16 +0000 UTCHum. Was this "fire" scripted in? Remember Ep. "Emerging Social Norms ft. Marty" on November 3 at the 49:18 mark when Liz starts a bit of discussion about Jane and fire? "Jane and I had a long talk about fire this morning and what makes them grow and the longer they burn the hotter they get and why the blue part of the flame is blue." Coincidence? Has anyone checked Jane's room for fire materials? Swabbed her for flammable residue?

2023-11-20 15:24:55 +0000 UTCThe problem isn't national difference. National difference is fine. The problem is the identification of one nation with the state, because it threatens national difference by forcing everyone else to either assimilate, emigrate, or accept second-class citizenship.
Richard
2023-11-20 02:22:16 +0000 UTCIIRC you’re the “porn is worse than cancer” guy so can’t tell if this shtick is performance art, but it’s completely obtuse to think that leveling cities, bombing hospitals, and shutting off water is an appropriate way to “eliminate”Hamas (good luck with that BTW, the Israeli right-wing political bloc is in the record saying that they support Hamas leadership in Palestine).
Folks,,
2023-11-19 22:58:04 +0000 UTCRight, so the Irish becoming a political minority in Ireland, the Japanese in Japan, Koreans in Korea, Greeks in Greece, Algerians in Algeria, Bhutanese in Bhutan, Palestinians in Palestine is neutral-to-good. End nations until we're all one amorphous blob without difference, the neoliberal dream. Theoretically I like the Habsburg approach, but that did not survive the tide of history.
TC
2023-11-19 18:04:33 +0000 UTCTired talking point. So a country can never wage war because the enemy will inevitably regroup and fight back? How many Nazi and Japanese imperialist attacks do you see against U.S. forces in Germany and Japan today? Go look up U.S. approval ratings in Vietnam today, they'll shock you. Eternal lasting peace is obviously impossible until the eschaton, war is a reality of life. But pacification, however temporary, is possible.

2023-11-17 23:40:22 +0000 UTCFunny that Liz would bring up the issue of freedom of speech when most of the people that lost their jobs over palestine posting are the same people that 5 years ago made sure people lost their jobs over posting a pepe meme. So while i personally rejoice in grifters like david velazco or some dumbass nyt lowlife getting sacked, on a political level i guess the best thing that could come out of this is a generally more libertarian attitude towards freedom of speech.

2023-11-17 08:31:51 +0000 UTCThat most states are and ought to be ethno-states (what is a nationality if not an ethnicity? what is a nation-state, supposedly the basic political unit of our time, if not an ethno-state?) is just taken for granted in the discourse nowadays, though the consequences are both horrifying and obvious. Heartening to hear some pushback. I recently read some pieces by Hannah Arendt on Palestine, from the late 40s. She seemed to think that a federal state in Palestine with strong protections for the Jewish minority was the best solution. She also argued, rather convincingly, that any long-term solution, ethical or otherwise, would require meaningful reconciliation with the region's Arab population. Even the elimination of a Palestinian population in Israel-controlled territory - whether by emigration, or other means - couldn't change that.

2023-11-16 20:03:12 +0000 UTCListening to Matt and Liz talk about the fire incident is literally the closest representation I've ever heard to how my boyfriend and I often discuss things. I just want space to bitch and be miserable and stressed about it and my boyfriend will be like "But it's fine. I'm chilling, relaxed, under control. I took care of it" causing great animosity and strife. Also representation in the bipolar II realm. It's a weird beast of a thing to live with and I send my love and prayers.

2023-11-16 18:53:43 +0000 UTCSolidarity with Liz and all who struggle with deep dark depression episodes. I recently came out of one of the roughest ones in my entire life where suicide ideation became so pervasive that I actually started devising ways I could take myself out so my family would still collect on my life insurance policies…. I don't know if it gets any darker than that, considering also that I absolutely could not bring myself to speak to anyone about it. But in the end, after seriously thinking and writing about doing it for several months, I found a little bit of strength in facing that head-on… came to the somewhat obvious conclusion that being alive and depressed was more interesting than being dead. That helped me finally snap out of it and now it's hard for me to believe how close I came… Thank you so much, Liz for having the courage to be open about your struggle. It has really helped me.

2023-11-16 16:30:28 +0000 UTCThe most enthusiastic U.S. proponents of Israeli statehood after WW2 were left-liberals. After all, the Zionist movement in Palestine was dominated by socialists. They also believed that such a horrifically oppressed people would have learned from their oppression to never embrace racial chauvinism themselves. Yet here we are.

2023-11-16 15:36:49 +0000 UTCThe idea that thousands of third parties’ lives are forfeit because of Hamas’s attack against Israel seems straightforwardly ghoulish. What moral principle justifies such disproportionate violence against people who had nothing to do with the attack? This logic seems indistinguishable from the logic of Hamas and terrorism itself
Josh B
2023-11-16 15:29:43 +0000 UTCHamas isn't going to survive this. Hezbollah and Iran have basically said "you're on your own with this one, guys." 10,000 deaths is a tragedy, but this round of the war was initiated by Hamas; they knew what the response from Israel was going to be and they went ahead and went on a rampage anyways because they thought the rest of the region was going to join in. Gazan civilian deaths were priced in. The blood is on their hands.
TC
2023-11-16 15:15:34 +0000 UTCIsrael responded appropriately when it repelled the initial Hamas attack. Everything done subsequent to that seems harder to justify as it does not seem like killing over 10,000 people will plausibly accomplish Israel’s stated goal of freeing the hostages or ending the threat of terrorism. I think the same logic as abortion bans applies here. If your chosen course of action, in this case killing tons of people via bombing, doesn’t actually accomplish your stated goals, what is the point of the action?

Josh B
2023-11-16 14:55:22 +0000 UTCSeeing the usually left-coded discursive moves like identity deference deployed to justify everything Israel does is what really convinced me of their uselessness and bankruptcy
Josh B
2023-11-16 14:54:28 +0000 UTCNo, you said they shouldn't respond at all because civilian deaths were unavoidable. What do you think the response should have been? Because it sounds like "Israel should dissolve itself and allow Hamas to conquer it, resulting in the deaths of many thousands more than what's happening in the current conflict."

TC
2023-11-16 08:25:05 +0000 UTCThe security situation is made worse by Israel responding in any way whatsoever? What are they supposed to do, just lay down their arms and allow the 10/7 Hamas incursion to sweep the entire country? You can argue over proportionality, but to not respond at all to an attack is suicidal.

I have seen plastic catch on fire and burn down a gazebo because the cigarette butts caught each other on fire. Sadly, smoking is a hazard to everyone. And even wet butts can reignite if you throw them in a spot where there's debris. Blah blah, but you know, stay safe everyone.

2023-11-15 21:34:31 +0000 UTCYears and years of polemics from the Bari Weisses of the world about how identity politics, victimhood culture, and an obsession with historical oppression leads to racism, censorship, maybe even violence. And now the same people are defending Zionism, an ethnonationalist creed centered around a belief in perpetual victimhood, just at the moment when it's used as a justification for mass slaughter. Curious!
