Latinx is an interesting case, because it almost immediately had a strong, and not entirely reactionary, opposing force. While I believe the origin of the x-suffix construction is from feminist/LGBTQ activist circles in Spain and Latin America, it's promulgation in the U.S. has been largely by white-led academic institutions/NGOs/activist orgs etc. This creates the problem of like, a Mexican immigrant line cook hearing it for the first time in the context of Elizabeth Warren or whoever saying that your language is structurally misogynist, down to the very ethnonym by which you self-describe, and she has a better alternative. Understandably, this news wasn't received well. In Matt's own state, there's an effort by Latino Democratic lawmakers to ban "Latinx" from use in state documents.
