My kids (17 and 15) have attended private schools thanks to faculty tuition remission. Matt, you're correct that not every family is going to be seeking "excellence" as defined by performance metrics. That's why my kids have attended my partners' schools and not the local public school. One of my kids tried out the public school for high school, and it was fine, but they decided to come back to their old school where they could focus (phones are forbidden in the classroom vs. zero boundaries at the public school). I went to a charter high school because my "conservative libertarian" parents despised the public school system, ideologically and also for racist reasons. I did not attend my entire senior year of school and nobody noticed. So I don't have romantic notions about alternatives to public school. I'm just a bad socialist and massive hypocrite ๐ฅฐ
