To be fair to Marx, I don't think he was ever an advocate of work for its own sake either. As I recall (from stuff I read a long time ago), in his evolutionar perspective, capitalism was a necessary stage in the progress toward enlightened socialism in part because it would result in the automation technologies that would free humans from labor and allow them to spend most of their time in more fulfilling pursuits.
