The Spectrum

Hello folks!

Over the years Matt and I have produced (I use this term extremely loosely) this podcast, one thing I've heard over and over again from longtime fans and incidental listeners is an interest in our discussion of autism.

Sometimes I hear from parents of autistic kids who are grateful to hear about an adult with autism who leads a happy, fairly ordinary (save for the internet shenanigans and thinktank bullshit and, you know, you get the point) life, with a spouse and kids. Sometimes I hear from autistic adults who are hopeful about finding a partner who fits well with them. Sometimes I hear from people who wonder if they or their significant other may fall somewhere on the spectrum, and are interested in hearing more about what that's like.

Because this subject area seems to be helpful and interesting to folks, we're up for doing an episode dealing with questions, curiosities or topics in this domain that you may be interested in. Obviously, a marriage isn't a science project and nobody deserves a medal for loving somebody for who they are; that's what we're made to do. But if our good fortune of meeting each other and raising a family can help others think through their circumstances, then we're glad to share.

So: hit us with those questions, curiosities, areas of interest, and we will give you a Very Special Episode of the Bruenigs.

xoxoxo

It is probably too late, but I’m curious if either Matt or Liz (more likely the latter?) have read anything by John Elder Robison or Temple Grandin. They’re high-functioning folks on the spectrum who have the ability to express their interior lives in fascinating and different accounts. _Look Me in the Eye_ is Robison’s account of being diagnosed only at age 40 or so, and then _Thinking in Pictures_ is Grandin’s description of how she thinks (kinda clear from the title, in typical ASD fashion maybe). If you haven’t read any of this or comparable stuff, is there a reason why not? I think Matt has said he doesn’t really read much, and on the most recent ep he’s said it’s because so much writing is unclear and badly edited, so it’s frustrating. Narratives by autistic people seem like they might overlap or not overlap with those problems in possibly interesting ways. As a non-neurodivergent person, in any case, they’ve been good to read.

I know y’all recently gave a well-deserved shout out to Don Hughes. Are there other leftists or comics with autism that y’all wanna recommend to the twitter users and pod listeners out there?
