Knockback, Episode 286 | Final Fantasy V

In 1992, Final Fantasy V came to Super Famicom in Japan, but in the west, the seminal JRPG would remain a mystery for years. In 1999 (via PS1!) English-speaking audiences would gain access to the game for the first time (unless you played fan translations via emulator, of course), and since then -- whether on GBA, PC, phones, or more recently modern consoles -- FFV has always held an interesting place in the pantheon of great Final Fantasy titles. Is it as monumental as IV, VI, or VII? Not at all. But it's still extremely special in its own right, an adventure predicated on a robust jobs system that would later help inspire the likes of Final Fantasy Tactics, jobs utilized by a small core group of protagonists that stand the test of time (and pull at your heartstrings, too). For KnockBack's triumphant return, we thought we'd get back into the Pixel Remasters where we left off, and needless to say, we've got a lot to go over. So get in your airship, or on your chocobo, or whatever mode of transportation speaks to you most, and join us for another old-school chat.

Unlocking the dual-wield ability coupled with the rapid attack skill would crush everything in this game lol. I love how the more time you invest in the job classes, the more broken the game would become. The job system makes FF5 and Ff Tactics an absolute joy to play

Finally got to this boys. Thanks. Great to hear your opinions on this game. 5 was a huge surprise for me. Now one of my favourite. I was playing the games along side you both. So I'll start 6 here right away. It's been a long wait.

Nathan Densley

Can you call it Knockback if you don't end it with a dad joke? So glad to have it back. Never played FFV and you both may of convinced me to play it

Kyle Chenard

LETS GO MORE KNOCKBACK! This is my favorite podcast

Blake Krogerson

I'm not sure what Colin used but there is a set of amazing guides on the steam community pages by a user name Lylat that are awesome. I used the guides for 1, 4 and 6. Worked beautifully!

Joe Cross

Currently listening on the subway in NYC going to check out some Amano at the Lomex Gallery

Philip Dunphy

What guide did you use for the platinum?

Chris Van Buren

So glad that Knockback is back!

Kevin Austin Webb

Hey Guys, glad Knockback is back! Just a quick note about FFV. You seemed to have missed a huge part of the job system in relation to the freelancer class. Each mastered job gives you a permanent stat increase to the freelancer class making it the most powerful class end game. The game really wants you to stick to the jobs and even tells you when you go back to the tutorial town late game. Thanks!

StinkyPinky

Just here to say that I've been a Patron for a long while here and Knockback has always been by far my favorite show. I'm so happy it's back and thank you both for a wonderful episode.

Colin Kolhoven

I understand that recording knockback like this episode is more work than the other shows because you have to play an entire video game...but let's be honest...it's worth it. Keep on truckin' boyz.

Keith Richards

Thank the Lord Knockback is still alive. I want them to do Metal Gear Solid 4

Christian Sovereign

God episode but as a long time listener to LSM I need to remind you that Dagan forgo to do his Dad joke at the end as he did before.

DavidG

The best LSM show is baaaaaack

Ryan

Shrek is a must watch, at least the first two.

Mateusz Kuklinski

The conversation about fighting God in JRPGs - there's this one YouTuber who did an excellent video essay on why that trope is so prominent in JRPGs specifically. It's Moon Channel's video "Why do you always kill Gods in JRPGs?" Also, as far as Persona 4 being smaller scope and brought up in the context of not fighting God...I do recall that Colin didn't quite finish the game lol.

Lunar Tear

That’s what I said. I think it’s the most anime of all the FFs

Jeremie Holt

So happy to see a new Knockback episode.

Gabe Manuel

…Final Fantasy 7 isn’t anime?

Awesome to have Knockback back. Final Fantasy V is one of the lesser entries IMO. It’s better than 1,2, and 3 but other than that, it’s not better than any of the others. I just feel like the story is a little weaker, at least the old version had some pretty weird difficulty spikes as well. The job system is ok in it but I always find them a little too vague with how you level up and gain stats. These are examples though of games when I hear people today say there aren’t enough women in games or it’s been dominated by male characters forever that just shows to me that they haven’t been gamers that long, only played specific types of games, or know nothing about the history of games. I honestly would love to see you guys do Final Fantasy 8. I think it would lead to really interesting discussion

PairOfShuse

LSM fans have been eating very well lately. Thanks, guys.
