Sometimes that happens because the facts are so clear there isn’t anything else to say, but there was room for a more interesting discussion here IMO.

Jim Ryan retired because flying back and forth between home in England and work in the USA (8-9 hr time difference) and occasionally Japan is a lot of stress on someone especially someone who has a family. And PS6 is getting deep into development, and you want to be able to see a product to its launch. Connie Booth dealt with a lot of IP creation… she worked at Sony since 1989 and she was fired like it was nothing, and now she works for one of the biggest live service juggernauts ever… EA… hmmm

2025-01-20 10:59:30 +0000 UTCI was hoping for a more thoughtful conversation about the canceled GaaS projects, and it unfortunately was the same as mainstream discourse. The facts are that PlayStation cannot work as they worked a decade ago. Creating single-player games, with budgets in a minimum of 200m $, within an industry filled with spikes/traps/threats for any production daring to say anything, is a risk a company does not want to take. What worked last gen, what was a winning strategy, is now a money-sink. Going full 100% business and hyperbolic: looking at how the competition is doing and how the console landscape looks, the big studios are a burden. If we want more Intergalactics, Uncharteds and Ratchets, PlayStation better nail that service game soon, or it will get really dire for PS Studios. So, I don’t think, looking down with disrespect on the efforts is such a wise move.

If you greenlighted and now are canceling all these projects, why continue with Fairgames? That seems about as guaranteed of a flop as you can get. Sony is so wildly out of touch recently that it boggles my mind as to how these people made these decisions that any gamer off of the street could tell you was a bad idea from the start. Unbelievably terrible management.

They have taken the silent approach with their consumers this generation, which is fine when it’s followed up by stellar games we want to play. Sony seems to be incompetent lately and it makes me long for the days when they would actually talk with their audience. Sounds ridiculous to demand the company reveals their projects in advance but maybe if they did they could have saved themselves millions of dollars by realizing that their core fan base couldn’t give a fiddlers fuck about the projects they are green lighting.

It's been something I thought about for years, but never thinking much of it. However, "exclusives" and having to distinguish from first party, second-party, third-party, this one is signed exclusive, this one has exclusive dlc, or exclusive cinematics (Sonic), are all much more prevalent than ever. I'm fairly certain it's just for aesthetic sake and the format of the show, but I wonder if it ever gives a listener the perception of "insert game" as a playstation exclusive.

If you combine Naughty Dog, Firewalk, Bluepoint and Bend we are talking 15+ years WASTED. We are talking 100's of millions WASTED. Just like The Lost Generation after WW1. We are seeing a lost generation from Sony first party this generation.

It seemed so clear that he had made a huge mistake choosing to make the studios focus on live service games. It just seemed so obvious this was going to be a disaster. We had just finished 2 State of Play's that were not good at all. Which was unheard of. Announcements for 1st party were few and far between. It's also clear that it's going to now take time to turn all this around. PlayStation studios aren't likely to be back in form until next generation. I've had PS5 since day one like I had 4 before it. There is no comparison. This is easily the most disappointing and inconsistent gen PlayStation has ever had. Thanks Jim Ryan.

Naughty dog, Insomniac, Bluepoint and Bend should never have been making live service games now they probably won't be ready until PS6 😵
