Just now listening, I really appreciate Jaffe around the 46 minute mark understanding some peoples’ frustration. I’m not an anti-woke person, I don’t like to get super involved in all of that, but the balance has tipped too far in female driven narrative at Sony. I’m not a Jaffe hater at all though, he’s fine, then the Atreus is female part was funny. Best wishes to all, I don’t dislike any guests or hosts, I only ever took issue with 1 thing anyone at LSM has said and even then, it’s minor.

I Iike playing female characters, but I do want some male characters too. In Sony’s first party it really has become one sided when I think they would be best suited to having a healthy variety. Recent male lead characters have been done away with: Nathan, Joel, Jin, etc And they have been replaced with Ellie and Abbey, Atsu and soon to be Cassie Add Chloe, Rivet, Returnal woman, Aloy, etc. it’s just too one sided. And the new naughty dog game will have a lead woman. I say let’s have a healthy mix because Astro bot is really holding it up for the men right now lol

It does when you fire up a game like, say UC4, and you are met with 8 levels back to back that serve as establishing where the characters are in life, introducing new characters, and as an info dump, where you do almost nothing but walk (with running disabled of course) to the next objective to trigger the next dialogue/cutscene. Sure there's a brief prison riot there, but then it's just run forward and do some rudimentary melee combat. 8 levels, close to 4 hours of sitting and waiting for the game to start. Then there are their outdated storytelling devices, and a cinematic presentation over gameplay aproach. If you're doing forced walking why your companions are dropping exposition on you, you're still in '00s when it comes to storytelling in games. Most of TLOU2 or UC4 felt like being stuck in traffic, waiting for them to let you play the damn game, and when they finally fo the pacing is whack. In UC4 there's like 25 enemy encounters in the game, all accessible from the main menu - and that would be fine in a 20hr long game, but they're not spaced out evenly, cause the cinematic presentation and their start-stoppy storytelling needs to happen - it's more 2-3 hours of walking around, listening to dialogue, and watching cutscenes(so you're itching to get into some action), then 3-4 enemy encounters in a row(so you're tired of them halfway through), and back to 2-3 hours of walking/climbing/talking. It's really annoying for me. There's a level in TLOU2 sandwiched by minutes of cutscenes, where you control Abby and the only real objective is to walk up the stairs to trigger the next cutscene, it lasts like half a minute, and I swear it feels like they had to put it there so that people's joypads wouldn't turn off, cause that would be a bad look. UC2 was peak ND for me, after that their cinematic presentation obsession started to get more and more intrusive - UC3's first half is boringm Tlou is actually a masterpiece, but UC4 is hard to sit through, and same goes for Tlou2. Lost legacy was done by a different team and it's...better. It's more of a game, while still having ND's trademark storytelling style. So imagine my disinterest in Intergalactic when all they show is a cinematic trailer.

You can see people holding out on this game until the issues are solved, and never going back to it either cause they weren't solved, or because so much time has passed that it now went into their 'buy on sale' category. Releasing close to RE4 remake might've been a problem, too.

Dead Space Remake had technical issues, and while the low quality caused by Variable Rate Shading on PS5 was solved, the PC port is still crippled by traversal stutter each time you enter a room, and it's not going to be patched anymore - the game's been abandoned. DA Veilguard uses Frostbite, too, and it works very well on PC, so apparently these issues could've been solved if the support was there.

With all due respect Colin, I really don’t understand the attitude you are having. It’s actually kind of childish in some ways. I’m one of the silent people you mentioned before. Not all the people who are silent are coming out and agreeing with your take. I’m also not one of these 100 percent anti woke people. People are saying you’re a naughty dog fanboy, you name an episode maligning anyone who doesn’t feel interested in Intergalactic as having a “derangement syndrome”, and then continue to say with Naughty Dogs pedigree, how could anyone not be interested in this game (you admittedly don’t care about Jak). You also go on and say we literally know nothing about the game, so how can it be judged, then continue to talk about the aesthetic of the trailer and what you like about it. In summary - you mention in this podcast what I said above, you insult people who aren’t interested in the game, then tell people they can’t have an opinion on a game from a trailer then go on to talk about what you like about said trailer. I truly, don’t understand how you cannot see how that might be condescending and hypocritical at the same time. You might like the game and you know what, I’m not one of the people saying you shouldn’t or can’t like the game (that’s stupid) but people have their reasons why they also don’t like the game. Some of those reasons are surface level, but I’ve seen many nuanced reasons why they don’t either. You’re lumping everyone in with the smaller group of people who just say “shaved head”. Myself included, I’ve seen people say why they don’t like the specific aesthetic of characters and the feel of the characters and attitudes of the characters. But I guess it’s ok for people like Jaffe to call me a moron and say I’m not interested in a game just because I don’t want to fuck the main character. Sure, disregard all my nuanced thought on the subject and just lump me in with that view that a very small amount of people have (meaning that’s the only reason why they won’t play it) and label me a moron. When it comes to Jaffe, while he was more reasonable this episode, I think it’s kind of hypocritical that you said knowing what you know now, you might not have Stuttering Craig on now but you will still have Jaffe on. Jaffe has literally been on your show and ripped on a large portion of the audience saying they are only good people if they voted for Trump for economic reasons and not anything else. Otherwise they are not good people. That was his clarification. Not his first statement on it, but what he used to clarify what he said. That’s ok though to be platformed? That’s on your platform. Off you’re platform he literally made videos of a woman and since he didn’t agree with her started saying people only listen to her because of her looks, completely invalidating anything she might say (I don’t even watch any of her content besides seeing a few clips). Actual sexism. He tried to play it off as that’s the only reason they got initially interested in her but I’m pretty sure he meant it in general when he first said it. Then Jaffe also compared being trans to being black in a Dragon Age Veilguard stream. I’m not one of the people trying to say who you can and can’t have on the show. I’ve been subscribed to Last Stand since day one. I like when you have multiple different people on with different perspectives. That being said, I do think you’ve had some extremely tone deaf takes recently on how it’s the audience in games changing, not the media when they have for years and years and years constantly berated their audience. Now after they start to either be more vocal or fight back, you’re going to say it’s their fault? That’s messed up IMO. That’s just the games media as well, not to mention gamers being constantly fed a stream of incomplete releases that need 17 patches to be in an acceptable place. You aren’t getting backlash about talking about Intergalactic. You get backlash for insulting anyone who isn’t interested in the game, naming episodes intergalactic derangement syndrome, and acting like it’s impossible to not like a kind of game while routinely skipping over Chris when a Japanese game gets mentioned because guess what, he doesn’t like an entire swatch of genre due to look/aesthetic alone. It’s quite possible to talk about a game you are excited about and like without insulting others who don’t. No clue if anyone will even read this since it’s long and I’m just getting around to listening to the episode.

Firstly, Col and Jaffe, love your work, Jaffe your my fav guest. But, how do you not get the overwhelming disdain for the Sony female lead initiative? 90% or more of the players of these games are male, 70% of male players prefer to play as a male character, Sony has taken franchises with male leads and replaced them with female leads and all new games coming that aren’t an existing IP have a female lead… This is concerted effort and it’s weird. It’s a similar scene in movies, look at all the action movies now with female leads and look at how well they’re recieved…not fucking well. And why is this? Even in in fiction women beating up hordes of men is too far fetched, that’s it, that’s the answer, it’s hard to buy into, anyone who’s played sports or done martial arts knows this. I am very excited about intergalactic, it’s going to be a day one game for me no matter what. I can buy into sci fi female lead more so than other settings, but I would have preferred a male lead, an Asian male lead would be great, we don’t get that often. I think ghost of yotei was the real tipping point, female samurais weren’t a thing, it’s going to be hard to buy into that game, a female samurai taking on hordes of males is immersion breaking. Again, I’ll still play it, it looks great, but it’s disappointing. There’s games aimed at men and games aimed at women, why is Sony taking the games that appeal to men and forcing in female leads? Why? Really why? What could it be? Why do most modern action movies have female leads?

Of course, but PC is a slightly more expensive option. I was trying not to make a monster post, but the number 4 was related to the news about Xbox opening its OS and hardware to allow more options (like Steam) on its platform (assuming they work out an agreement ). Personally, I don't think there's a reason for either console with PC being the clear favorite if you have the extra cash. But there are legitimate reasons for people to want to buy PS and Xbox consoles.

As someone who is a ND fan and very excited for Intergalactic, I think you make some very valid points. It is quite bizarre that if you look at PS' first party roster there are only two main franchises (GoW and Spiderman) left with a male lead. The rest (Returnal, Horizon, The Last of Us, Uncharted, Ghost of Yotei, Intergalactic) all have/will have female leads so we have officially reached the point where 'more diversity' actually means 'more men' lol I think Intergalactic will be a very good game. But I don't think it was a good trailer. A trailer's first and foremost function should be to get people excited for the game and the numbers show pretty clearly that they didn't achieve that goal. They had 4 minutes and 30 seconds and all we saw was a conversation between two people and 5 seconds of combat. If they had reserved even only a minute for showing more combat/action, what the world and levels will look like, what kind of gameplay systems there are, etc, I think the reaction would have been completely different and people would not have made such an issue out of the main character. ND really didn't do themselves any favour with this one

Love Jaffe, just getting that out of the way. Love Colin too, but he isn’t quite being sincere with the Intergalactic critique issue and that’s ok, we all can handwave critique counter to things we love. I think the point some have here is the lack of engagement or unwillingness to engage with the legitimate gripes people have brought up in relation to it, beyond the silliness of ‘character is ugly’ of course. Is the criticism all over the place? I guess, but so is the praise and by that nature, it’s hard to ignore the obvious here. Almost every main character in Sony’ first party stable now features females after doing away with the male leads. Whether that’s a good or bad thing remains to be seen, but it’s glaring and bares mentioning, especially when gamers are primarily male. The girl boss thing is exactly what audiences are rejecting right now. It’s not that the main character is a woman, it’s that she comes across as a mean, try-hard throughout the trailer and that’s the archetype getting shit on right now. The sucking on the straw while someone who seemingly cares about this person, talks, the bitchy attitude after the same person voices concern, it’s all there and it’s just immensely tiring as a trope. Lastly for me, Naughty Dog hasn’t released a game since 2020, it’s only release since 2015. In that time one game has been cancelled, a TLOU MP game and we’ve gotten 2 remasters, one of which was a remaster of a remaster, both are also The Last of Us. I think it is valid to ask that’s it? With this trailer. To me, after such a long hiatus I wanted to see what the game played like instead of a GOTG inspired cutscene and yes, it’s definitely highly Guardians of the Galaxy inspired with some homages to other sci-fi tossed in. I think summarizing the critique as ‘because it’s a woman’ or ‘it’s because she isn’t hot’ is pretty bottom barrel. It’s more, the voice actor seems like kind of a shitty person and we don’t like that sort of thing, along with everything I detailed above. If anyone is genuinely mad that the character isn’t some model then get outside more, truly. Will the game be good? Most likely it will be great, but good or bad we can only engage with what was shown and to me, what was shown was disappointing and insufficient given the context of Naughty Dog right now.

But I did seem to notice his question to right leaning guests are always framed differently than left leaning guests, especially during the election. When a story is given to me, as such with Uncharted, The Last of Us, Horizon, God of War, etc. I don't really care what gender or species the character is. I don't watch a movie like Alien and go "well fuck, I can't get into this because the main character is a woman," I go "cool, let's see what the story is." If the story is bad, or if the dialogue is poorly written then that's one thing. Those are valid criticisms. When someone tells a story, and they're giving you the characters, it ultimately doesn't matter if you can relate to them on a personal level. What matters is if you can relate to the themes and universal emotions the story has. It's all so idiotic.
