Defining Duke, Episode 206 | WHAT A SHOW! - Our Reactions To The Game Awards 2024
Added 2024-12-14 17:00:11 +0000 UTC
After a disastrous showing in 2023, Geoff Keighley and his team put together arguably their best show for the 10th anniversary of The Game Awards! While not perfect, major issues with pacing, presenters, and speech time seemed to be ironed out. It also doesn't hurt that the show was chockful of insane announcements. Of course, we get into The Black Rock who is delivering not just one, but two massive RPGs in a single year thanks to The Outer Worlds 2, but also a staggering list of other games. An Okami sequel is real as is Naughty Dog's new sci-fi IP. Onimusha is back as is a new IP for Yakuza developer, RGG. They're not just working on Project Century at RGG, but also reviving Virtua Fighter. Borderlands 4 and Mafia: The Old Country, massive showing in their own right, end up as footnotes due to the seismic amount of announcements packed into this show. The list goes on much longer than that, but we'll leave you a little something to listen to now. Enjoy!

I'm just stating what my initial impression was. I hated it. it felt very out of place

Cog, just so you’re aware if you’re not already, that Amir dude has a high enough position at Tencent, I wouldn’t be so quick to sing his praises, if they eat up Ubisoft then the layoff armageddon is on

I'm not really up on their vision of retro futurism- even if it is the 80s- from what I saw, but are you really applying realism to this sort of game?

I got my license when I was 20 and definitely felt embarrassed not to have it. More power to fellow LSM members for doing something that’s actually scary but beneficial. It’s one of the few perks of being an adult.

I don't know where you read that, the opening of the video quotes "ancient sempirian scripture" from 1986. So I'm pretty sure the game takes place much further into the future
We'll see. Hopefully they can make it make sense.....

To be fair from what I read this isn't the future, it's literally the 1980s. Seems like some kinda alternate timeline where space travel advanced super quickly

I kind of hated the Intergalactic reveal. The graphics are stunning, and I'm sure the game will be fun....but I hate the retro-future nonsense. No way are they using CDs in the future. No way are they using old crappy CRTs. And no one in the world uses a hair clipper that way.
Retrofuture makes sense for movies made in the 70s and 80s...cause what do they know? It just rubbed me all wrong for this game.

Cog really referred to the biggest reveal of the show as “almost a footnote” 😭

Great job getting that and getting the freedom to do what you need. I know a few young people even into their late 20's who were like you. I was too nervous when I was 16 I ended up waiting till I was 18 to get it. Which made me miss out on 2 years of blissful opportunity. To say that its irrational to fear, it's really not, it's the most dangerous thing we humans in the current culture do. but as you stated here, the beauty thing about facing those anxieties is the progress conquering them bring. Always fight your anxieties, they are designed to hold us back and in comfort, not in progress. Fuck Anxiety

The last 5 minutes of the show is the best DD content ever. I’ve rewound it 5 times. #DDthroatcoat

Yeah I don't understand people thinking that about Matty and AstroBot. I did however think it was a strange comment from Cog saying that "oh people were mad" about Astro winning - as that's not the reaction I've seen at all.
If anything it was sheer surprise (which it shouldn't have been, given the critical reception Astro got, and how much reviewers loved it ). But even those people seemed happy for a small studio like Asobi to win it, and it wasn't surprising to many imo, as if was a very open year anyway. Was it just ILP that Cog is talking about being mad lol

Agree. Erdtree was the best piece of gaming content I personally played all year. However, it’s a dlc. It should not have been nominated.

Woah that intro write in about driving really hit me, I had the exact same experience earlier this year. 25 and didn’t bother with my license due to an irrational fear but decided it was time. I had that anxiety and panic for about a month and a half afterwards but what helped me out was I was finally able to go to the gym anytime I wanted without relying on public transit or having to pay for ride shares all the time so I committed to going daily. It was about a 30 min drive there for me so I was banking minimum an hour experience each day until one day I realized that I just zoned out the entire ride and from there on the anxiety went away and now I can’t imagine how I lived without my license for so long. It gets to the point where you don’t really want to be driven by anyone and your car becomes like a second home, a place where you’re most comfortable. At least that’s been my experience.

I absolutely agree that this was the best Game Awards yet, by far. I was bummed that we still haven’t heard more on State of Decay 3 but with everything that we did hear, I’m not too upset.
Merry Christmas, Dukes!

Also people saying Matty hated Astrobot clearly don’t listen to the show. He shattered a little kid’s dream getting the last physical copy of the game at the store! That’s how much he likes the game 😂

100% agree with Cog. Metaphor was my choice for goty with Astrobot as a very close second, so I was very happy not only with the goty but the whole show, but I would also hate if Erdtree had won goty (even though I loved it, it’s a fucking DLC).

Anyone know which bit of the Nightreign trailer showed Bloodborne characters/monsters? I didn't see any Bloodborne and assumed it wouldn't be included. Hoping I just missed it!

Of all the announcements that showed gameplay, Project Century was hands down the biggest highlight for me. Like Cog said, it looks SICK.

The Metaphor comment at the end sounds like one you'd make if you haven't played a JRPG since the late 90s, or haven't scratched the surface of another ATLUS game period. Lol.

Shout out to Matty for staying in the right lane as a slow driver. To many people driving under the speed limit in the left lane here in Texas and it’s the worst.

It really was a good show. Exciting games to look forward to, the winner’s speeches were great, and the end speech from Larian’s game director especially was legendary.
