Just went back and listened to Colin's chat about Everybody's Gone To The Rapture and Walking Sims after it came up in the wrap up. Addressing past Colin here but there are plenty more than just 10 or so must play walking sims, it's just a very very PC centric genre, and perhaps one of the most popular genres in indie circles given the comparably low barrier for entry to make them and the generally small/free price tag. Games like Anatomy, Beginners Guide, INFRA, BABBDI and the CosmoD games are among my favourite games of the last decade or so.

It's okay when someone disagrees with you even if it's about something you love. You should mention why you like the character and the design/writing choices for the game. Have you never heard of the term "Girl Boss"? Girlboss is a trope in media that has been extremely overused in the last 5 years. It's essentially when you take a woman and put her in a traditional man's role while not adding any real or valuable feminine qualities. (beauty, motherhood, collaboration, organization, intelligence) It's essentially an easy way to get brownie points with a political faction and is generally accepted writing because the industry has accepted it. In reality, it's extremely popular writing style because it is the easiest way for an activist to write because they aren't actual writers. I was seriously hoping for ND's new game to be (dark) fantasy, so I was kinda disappointed since the whole sci-fi/futuristic aesthetic seems to be over saturated these days. I'm still looking forward to it because ND has never disappointed me and the gameplay is always fire. They kind of brought the backlash on themselves though, did they really expect people were going to go crazy over a trailer that for 90% consisted of an edgy conversation with a girlboss? I'm pretty sure the conversation around it would be wholly different if they showed us a few glimpses of the world and some action sequences other than the 3 seconds we got. It reminded me of that initial Concord trailer of that burger on a spaceship. Have devs really become so arrogant to think that we become super excited for a game even though we have no idea what the gameplay is going to look like?

I think Intergalactic looks fine, but the reveal doesn’t give me confidence. This is Naughty Dog’s 1st reveal trailer for a new IP in 13 years, and this felt underwhelming. Without Naughty Dog’s name, no one would be looking at this. We can hope for the best. I’m assuming it’s a 2027 Summer release based on history. Michel Ancel is a game creator that I have always held in high regard, being able to take the nostalgia of my youth (2D platformers & early 3D Zelda) and evolve it while making it unique (Rayman Origins + Legends & Beyond Good & Evil). The Ubisoft work environment has certainly been put under a spotlight. I hope the best for those negatively affected… but, like me still listening to Michael Jackson/Jackson 5, I think my mind will prioritize talent over decency (unless it is egregious).

It’s a developer darling, made extremely lean with a small studio, meta score through the roof (which in this case does mean something since the people responsible for the meta represent a good portion of voters) and is just the most fun game to play. It reminds me of how the same group of people assumed Abby was the trans character in TLOU2 after the leaks came out - purely because she was muscular. Fair point! I think I was a bit harsh in my initial comment. I liked Last of Us 2 a lot, especially its story, but I wish ND was more ambitious with its level design. The open area you talk about for Ellie: Day 1 was nice, but we didn't get that level of openness again. Also, I wish the stealth mechanics were a bit more developed. Perhaps more smarter AI enemies and more intricate level design? Personally I didn't get that *amazing* moment from Last of Us 2 that stood out in gameplay. For instance, Pittsburgh in Last of Us 1 stood out to me a lot, the shipwreck fight in Uncharted 4, and the train sequence in Uncharted: Lost Legacy stood out a lot with great level design. Another thing I like from Last of Us 1 over 2 is the art direction. Last of Us 1 is a trek across America with amazing diverse locales. Last of Us 2 is primarily rainy Seattle, which grew stale to me. Though the last sequence in Santa Barbara was amazing and beautiful visually. Overall I loved Part 2. Where Part 2 is an 8 or 9 for me, Last of Us 1 is a 10/10 and modern classic.

Oh definitely. I'm also kind of mixed on the Intergalactic trailer (this is coming from someone who loves ND games), but the fact that Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor are making the score is terrific. Their soundtracks on Challengers and The Social Network is amazing. Can't wait for their soundtrack for the upcoming Tron: Ares film coming out next fall.

The Last of Us 2 has smooth movement and animations, but the gameplay and level design itself is bare bones. Granted, that’s what their mission design is but it’s clear that story, cinematics, script, and acting are of the most importance to ND besides top graphics and animation. For as impressive as Last of Us 2 is, the level design, enemy design, and progression was personally nothing to write home about. It felt like a bit more expanded from Last of Us 1. I hope ND evolves but this will be another linear game with not many game mechanics. Probably not a 3rd person shooter, but more of a 3rd person combat oriented game. And that’s fine, ND is good at what they do, but I don’t think they’re at their best as they were with Uncharted 2 and Last of Us 1.

In any case, every single other big announcement was a sequel, so I’m thankful for something new.

But I also recognize that I'm basically a fringe case and that for a mainstream audience it was probably underwhelming. Looking forward to Dying Light: The Beast and Mafia: The Old Country. But the other showcases were meh. People were making this out to be at E3 levels of hype. Some people on Twitter genuinely thought Half-Life 3 would be announced (that's never coming out). The Witcher 4 was a CGI trailer and I guarantee that isn't coming out until late 2026 or 2027, I wish it wasn't announced so early. Borderlands 4 looks more like the same. Naughty Dog's new game, Intergalactic... well, at least Tony Dalton and Kumail Nanjiani are in it! Man, what a disappointing showcase for Naughty Dog. And all that product placement in a trailer (Adidas, Porsche, Sony) is disappointing. I liked the main actress, Tati Gabrielle, from YOU on Netflix seasons 3 and 4. But I don't really like the sassiness of this overconfident character (this reminds me of Amy Hennig's writing more; I expected different from Neil Druckmann). Prediction: Intergalactic is gonna be inspired by Soulsborne games. Naughty Dog has already admitted in their Last of Us 2 making-of video that they wanted to make a Bloodborne-style combat sequel to Last of Us. So I expect Druckmann is doing that here. The games media is gonna love this game without fault when it releases, but I honestly am hesitant. I've loved every Naughty Dog game since Uncharted 1, but they increasingly prioritize cinematics over gameplay to the point that it seems they're ashamed of making video games. Last of Us 2 had a good story, but it has my least favorite level design and pacing for a ND game. Meanwhile, Last of Us 1 is a classic that I can replay without getting tired of.

Okami, Onimusha, new Fumito Ueda project, the Ninja Gaiden game were the standouts. All in all a fine, if not a little underwhelming show that I feel asleep to about 2 hours in. I will reserve judgment for Intergalactic until I play it, but that trailer shall be judged harshly. It’s unacceptable to spend millions on a 4+ minute trailer only to have it dud. You have to grab the audience with something endearing or interesting and this did neither. I get that you don’t want to spoil the story, but you have to give us something to hang onto and it has to be more than a moody girl with a checkered past.

5 hours? LFG, when the Naughty Dog logo hitted the scream I knew we were in for a legendary episode. Can’t wait to play Intergalactic and the worst people online are already calling it “woke” lmao. Outside of it I was very happy with Astro Bot winning GOTY even if the sacred boys weren’t very hyped about this possibility (I know Chris loved it tho) but seeing a 3D plataformer outside of Nintendo winning goty is fantastic! Japan Studios lives!

Haven’t had the chance to listen yet but I’m quite surprised to see you guys were so upbeat about the show because I thought outside of the Witcher 4 it was a complete dud. The new Naughty Dog game didn’t impress me in the least. The Game of Thrones game looked interesting but I heard it’s a mobile game so there goes that. And another copy paste fromsoft game I couldn’t care less about. There may have been a smaller game or two that looked somewhat interesting but honestly nothing memorable.
