Constellation, Episode 100 | Masculinity, Social Media Exodus, Writer's Block
Added 2024-12-02 17:00:17 +0000 UTC
It’s time for another episode of Constellation, Last Stand Media’s weekly conversational fever dream. On this week’s episode, the illustrious Gene Park (formerly known as Jeen “Mac Daddy” Parc) discusses “Masculinity” and how he and the crew feel about what it means to be a man in a modern world. We’re also joined by Ben Smith, the disgraced former mayor of Assassinland PA, who shrewdly used his inability to bring a topic AS a topic with “Writer's Block.” What a clever feller. Revoke his security clearance. He is dangerous. Chris Ray Gun, a straight man who thought Wicked was quote “fantastic,” hosts this week and gets a temperature check on the “Social Media Exodus” to BlueSky and Threads and whether it actually has a chance or serves any purpose. Enjoy the show while you can! Our planet’s magnetic field is temporary and very fragile and I will personally stop at nothing to keep it so.

I don't understand the Gene hate if he goes on a 10 minute talk, so what... we listening to a 3+ hour podcasts multiple times per week & somehow don't have the attention span for 10 minutes. I guess it's subjective but I really don't see the big deal, great ep guys.

My god, that twitter/bluesky conversation was mind numbing. You guys need to realize that 99% of normal people don't give a fuck about Twitter or blue sky or whatever the fuck. You are engaging with a sad 1% of people that care about that stuff. It's so incredibly cringey that you guys put so much stock in social media. Ben was the only sane one in that discussion.

i don't believe in keeping personal finance to myself. there's power in sharing your salary so other people can value their own worth. if me making six figures and still being poor in DC makes you feel uncomfortable, i have to say that is more your problem than mine.
Gene Park
2024-12-04 19:41:50 +0000 UTC
Sure, I understand that 6 figures might not be a lot in a city like DC. That being said, it's still substantially more than most Americans make. I was just always taught to keep your personal finances to yourself. Hence the term 'personal finances'. Whether you make a lot or a little, just keep it to yourself. But that's just me. We can agree to disagree. I respect your stance. Take care.

2024-12-04 17:42:41 +0000 UTC
dakota i appreciate you trying to be respectful. i see that and it's nice so thanks. good job avoiding douchebags in your life, that's healthy! unfortunately, i live in washington dc. i am in a city FULL of douchebags.
here's more context: let's be real. i am the most intimate contact you have with a personality in the mainstream media space. trust me when i say the mainstream media space is CHOKED with egotistical, braggy people. it's just the nature of the business. we are Type AAA. it's why i'm the only person from Hawaii or Guam that's made it this far. it's because my personality can go toe to toe with these douchebags. now i'm just one of them lol
Gene Park
2024-12-04 17:22:38 +0000 UTC
mike, six figures in dc is a middle class wage. that’s not showing off how much money i make. some of you really just misinterpret what i mean. maybe i’m not communicating that clearly but i would hope you guys understand that dc is not a cheap city to live in without me explaining that every time.
Gene Park
2024-12-04 17:09:10 +0000 UTC
That’s fine and it was probably dumb to think you’d change based on a comment from a random person on the internet. You’re also right that I don’t know enough douche bags because I stay away from people that brag a lot. However, I do think there is a difference between bragging and recognizing your accomplishments. I was about to write more but I don’t want to come off as defensive or attacking you for being yourself. You do you Gene and despite my gripes, you do great video game analysis and I’ll look forward to listening to episodes more focused on that strength of yours.

Gene, a few Constellations ago (I don't remember the exact episode) you repeatedly mentioned how you made over 6 figures. I like you Gene, but talking about those things is unbecoming.

mike i never talk about how much money i have. i’ve done the opposite. LSM makes up for money my own company doesn’t pay me

2024-12-04 04:45:04 +0000 UTC
i need yall to understand also that i talk about women a lot because my life is filled with women. that is not a brag, the LSM boys are like 90% of the men i talk to.
and here’s another example that might piss you off: my ex girlfriends always used to think i was too boastful too. they would tell me that im talking up my accomplishments and work too much. but again: it’s exactly my self promotion that i attribute to my career. it’s why most of the people ive worked with fall off. its why i was invited to be on this network anyway.
i have been trying to turn it down, but you gotta understand that this is me naturally. i love myself. remember: kanye was my biggest influence for years.

Gene Park
2024-12-04 04:25:02 +0000 UTC
sorry buddy. it is who i am. if you think i brag too much, you don’t know enough douchebags lol.
i got to where i am professionally because i am good at being a self promoter. you only have one life to live, and i prefer acknowledging my own strengths loudly and proudly. i know other are not or find that uncomfortable, and thats what makes us different.
but i’m not going to change what i do because of comments online. if i did, i would’ve never joined LSM in the first place. i’m here because i am who i am.

I also miss Knockback. :(
I understand that Constellation takes very little prep and effort relative to Knockback, but LSM lost a really unique, high quality show.
It sucks that high effort content like Knockback isn’t rewarded with better engagement, but it is what it is.

It's my only gripe about 3 hosts. I don't just want 4 for the sake of it. I loved knockback for the brotherly dynamic and was glad that it would ve continued in knockback. With the addition of two guests to balance out the bros. Also reminiscent of early KF days on the GOG show with 4 guests and topics. I understand Dagan is busy with his animation career which can lead to him missing shows which is totally understandable. It seems like Colin is just happy to do fewer shows.

Great episode overall! I loved this combo.
Got to say though. I don't think BluSky is any more chill than Twitter. I post store stuff on there and sometimes lurk. Blu is just as cancer as X. Its just Far Left X.
But it's just like Ben says that SM is what you let it do. It's great advice. My X feed as of now is in a good spot the only bad thing that appears is Grummz' dumbass and "Here's this story, look at my other 20 posts about to finish it"

I agree. I like Gene, but I've commented before about how it's not cool to talk about how much money you make or how many women you sleep with. It's very douchey and Gene does this on almost every podcast he's on (I don't listen to Punching Up so I can't speak to that).

Not enough people mentioning this particular point. I wish Constellation went back to biweekly if it meant having the two of them together more. It’s been a bummer.

Yeah, real. It’s a struggle. Don’t get me wrong though - some kids are trying their hardest. Some of these guys who haven’t read a book in all of high school got through Frankenstein with me kicking and screaming. The best we can do is keep trying, and keep doing the best we can for them. It’s hard, man.

I get sad when I see so many of the young men I work with that straight up can not read. I'm not saying they don't read in their free time, I mean they are essentially illiterate. I don't think this is one of those "we're gettin older and this new generation is stupid" takes. I'm genuinely concerned about the young men in America.

Same here, thank you for putting it respectfully. I started listening to LSM content through the first episode of Punching Up so I like Gene and think he’s funny, but the constant bragging is tedious. Even Ben mentioned in the episode that Gene talks about getting women the most out of everyone.

Get rid of Knockback. But don't worry, you still get the Colin and Dagan duo in constellation! With 2 additional guests! Now the brothers rarely host, let alone on the same episode. And we get 3 guests.

"Social media does for you what you let it do". I am going to miss Ben so much. As a father of 4 where I too like Ben have to sacrifice sleep to get game time, I relate the most to him. Such wisdom in what he said throughout the whole episode.

I enjoyed this episode a lot. But I do think the show is better with four people.
I get (and respect) wanting to run the company leaner when you’re paying each person for their appearances. I also get the scheduling issues that always wanting four people can create.
That said, in this episode, the discussion on masculinity in particular, would’ve been massively improved by Micah as a 4th.
I think a limit of three sometimes is fine. But enforcing it for every episode is a mistake IMO - the format should be more flexible.

I might be in the minority with this take but I gotta say it in hope that Gene reads this:
This is the 3rd straight LSM episode with Gene bragging for a straight 10+ minutes. I love his gaming takes and hearing his stories can be entertaining. However, I just can’t stand it when people brag about themselves every chance they get. If you read this Gene, please consider toning it down a bit. I really wanted to listen to the whole episode but couldn’t sit through anymore bragging.

For a conversation about education, as a teacher - I unfortunately think Gene isn’t up to date with the problems in education *currently.* I’ve got no idea what clicker he’s talking about multiple times; common core absolutely has lots of issues, but, I think some of the talk may just be a bit outdated.
I’d like to add:
I teach high school English, specifically seniors. On the point about book reports, we still do those. However, students straight up will not read outside of class. It’s an epidemic issue at many, many schools. You can fail them on assignments, but ultimately, administrators push them through anyway. I have students who have failed every class, but just get placed in a classroom with a Chromebook, and they just do credit recovery on a computer. It’s piss easy, and is absolutely what, in my opinion, is sorta plaguing education right now.
Anyway - great episode still boys, but that section had me malding lol. Not from disagreement, but, more from how the issue has become somehow even larger.
Love you guys, and thanks for the good talk. Had to rant it out. Hopefully this comes off as respectful - I’m not intending to disagree, more so just trying to add that the problem is only getting worse, lol

Regarding masculinity - pretty much agree with Ben. There are obvious traits that men lean towards way more than women do and vice versa.
Social media - this whole blusky discussion is extremely disingenuous. It’s being portrayed like it’s some bastion of calmness and chillness. I’ve heard the exact opposite of people reporting each other, it’s highly censorious and then at the same time they got inundated apparently with like 40000 cases of child porn being reported. None of this was brought up. The people that complain about Twitter are disingenuous now too.
Problems with Twitter: bots, overrun by porn, violent videos randomly.
People saying it’s toxic etc just don’t like Elon Musk and/or don’t like that the opposite view point isn’t being censored now. Besides the problems I listed above, Twitter is exactly the same except if you have an opinion slightly to the right of the far left, you aren’t getting banned now. Even the problem with Musk: you don’t have to like him at all, you can hate him, but to act like it wasn’t the same under Jack Dorsey except far left, then you are either ideologically captured or disingenuous. Ben had the best take on social media by far

Can't believe Chris said he thinks people don't meet at bars. I met my wife at a bar, she was at a bachelorette party and they had one of those silly games where they have to go up to random guys and ask them for stuff as a sort of scavenger hunt. They were looking for whitey tighties and a guy who knew a magic trick. I was wearing boxer briefs but I did a pretty good magic trick for them with a cigarette I had learned from a Bar Magician I met one time.
I hung out with the bachelorette party for the rest of the night and met my wife and we exchanged numbers. I put my number in her phone as Jay the Magic Trick Guy.
I met tons of women at bars just going up and talking to them, not hitting on them like some crazy pick up guy. But that's the whole reason men and women go to bars for the most part is to meet people. I got shut down a lot, I mean I'm not even a great looking guy and I'm pretty damn shy, but if you don't put yourself out there you're not going to meet anyone new.
