Sacred Symbols+, #420 | A Conversation With Obsolete Sony and Sandeep Rai
Added 2024-11-23 17:00:12 +0000 UTC
I (Colin) am very, very pleased to welcome Eddie -- also known as Obsolete Sony -- to Sacred Symbols+, along with returning guest Sandeep Rai, a writer and entrepreneur with a growing catalog of Kickstarter successes. If you're not familiar with Obsolete Sony, it's Eddie's remarkable Twitter/X account (as well as a Substack, IG, and more) dedicated to the storied history of the Sony brand, and it has attracted a legion of followers because of the quality and depth of its output. And now that Obsolete Sony and Sandeep have serendipitously found each other, the two are collaborating on an all-new Kickstarter aimed squarely at the type of people who listen to Sacred Symbols. It's called Sony Year-By-Year: A Visual Journey, and it's shaping up to be exceptional. Sandeep's extensive history of awesome PlayStation-related Kickstarters should itself give you all the confidence in the world, but once you hear from Eddie himself in his first ever interview, chances are you're going to be totally sold. If you've ever wanted to hear one of the world's foremost experts on the Sony brand have his brain picked by one of the world's biggest PlayStation nerds, well, simply hit play.

On the anti-Japanese sentiment point Colin made. It seems like a turning point on US sentiment on Japanese products was during the 70s due to their price point and craftsmanship. The oil embargo also pushed people towards Japanese cars. There would be a major backlash in the 80s it seemed due to the Japanese buying many companies and properties here and outcompeting American brands.

Can’t say that I’m as excited as Colin was, but it ended up being an interesting enough listen. Eddie did pretty good for a first podcast. I’m curious to check out the book.

I don't normally comment either but lets get these 2 on again. Love me some Sandeep Rai and now Obsolete Eddie. Perhaps a series of SS+ episodes, 1 hour isnt enough!

Never typically comment but just wanted to say this guy was a treat to listen to. I know this episode won’t have mass appeal like the others but you rarely get to listen to a guest who basically has an answer for every question despite how varied they may be.
Well done.

Hey 👋. Great episode, appreciate what y'all are doing and looking forward to see what you two do in the future. Glad to hear it was mainly for him to chat with Colin, just something I noticed and stood out while watching! Appreciate your time!
Best!

Hi Jon, this is Sandeep. I didn’t feel disrespected. To be honest, this episode was mainly for Colin to interview Eddie. I said to Eddie a couple of days earlier that I didn’t need to be there but he said I should because he was feeling nervous. Eddie is so knowledgeable about Sony and he has such a cool collection of old Sony tech that it’s always cool hearing him talk. :)

This was a good episode but wow obsolete talked the whole time and the other guy didn't get to talk at all! Kind of disrespectful. Everytime he wanted to start saying something which was only a few times, obsolete just started talking over him and took over

Man, Colin really hyped up this guest but as someone who doesn't use Twitter/X, I have no idea who this guy is. Looking forward to listening but Colin, not everyone lives on Twitter.
Edit after listening: This episode was awesome. Very knowledgeable guy and fascinating information. Didn't mean to be negative in my initial comment, just don't like the assumption that everyone is on Twitter or that it's even remotely relevant to most people.

Obviously not listened, but I purchased all 4 of the retro playstation magazines thanks to Colin recommending them.
Great stuff. Look forward to issue 5!
