I like dagen and like when he's the host on a constellation, but he probably shouldn't be on the next political podcast. He rarely speaks more than a question or maybe a sentence, and I've watched the previous political podcasts and it's been the same mostly. Not saying everyone has to be outspoken all the time like Jaffe or Colin, but at times I felt it was the Colin and Jaffe show exclusively. I also think a fourth person would have done wonders here, as an audio listener that has it playing in the background while I'm working all the time, I do typically listen to the whole show even if it's 5 hours long. Should mention as well, I do like the political podcasts, even as someone not into politics in general.

Honestly I don’t see the point in having these political episodes when none of the hosts are equipped for it. Colin is clearly deep in the right wing alternative media vortex and rips most of his arguments straight from there. Many of his claims are dubious at best and his arguments are often predicated on pure conjecture or extremely flawed logic. Meanwhile the other hosts basically have to assume that everything he says is true or sound because they aren’t informed enough to fact check him or give proper pushback. Edit: I don’t want to be unfairly critical of Colin. I think he’s intelligent and actually I agree with him on a few things. I just think he’s bought into the alternative media narrative and he makes some outlandish logical leaps to rationalize a lot of typical right wing/pro-Trump stances (all while insisting he doesn’t like Trump). The real issue I have is that nobody on the show knows enough to check him, so he gets to make wild assertions with impunity and it’s just frustrating to listen to. Jaffe on the other hand fits the bleeding heart American “liberal” stereotype more than anybody I’ve ever encountered. His heart is in the right place but his politics are almost entirely based on emotion and he obviously takes whatever the mainstream media says as gospel. He comes across as uninformed and despite being the discussion’s “left wing” representative he pretty much only talks about social justice issues and the same tired Trump indictments we have been bombarded with for eight years and counting. I love Dagan but he contributes almost nothing here. These episodes just shouldn’t be recorded without Gene and Chris, who in previous episodes have at least been prepared to talk about the various points that Colin raises. By the way, it’s fucking hilarious to me that people in the comments want a “real conservative” on these episodes as if liberal/left wing politics are well represented. Overall I’m just really disappointed with the quality of these episodes, which often amount to Colin and Jaffe talking past each other for hours while offering little to no valuable insight on any of the topics they discuss. And before you tell me not to listen to the political episodes if I don’t like them, I won’t anymore, but I wanted to give this one a fair shake before I made that call.

Did you even read my comment I admitted the economy was better under Trump. But that no policies of him had a positive effect on the economy. And yes he "inherited" it. At least argue why that is untrue instead of dismissing it. During the Obama years unemployment was on a downward trajectory from 10% in 2008 to 4,7 % in 2016. Trump inherited that downward tracjectory and took all de the credit. Obama policy increased middle class income from 55900 in 2012 to around 61000 in 2016. Trump inherits this growth and flattens it out a bit (i admit there was still growth though). The Stock market was at a low in 2008 and Obama increased it every year. Business inventsment, trade deficit, us consumer confidence. All these positive trendlines started in the Obama years and Trump took over those trendlines. I bet you can't find any meaningfull economic metric that Trump grew (or decreased like unemployment), that wasn already on positive trendline during the Obama years. Before covid of course.

We "know" that the justice system is rigged; that democracy is choosing the lesser of 2 evils who tend not to care about us and our needs (even with Obama); that the economy is in shambles even though Biden tells us it isn't; etc. Trump was victimized by the justice system like many people of color are. Trump spoke out against the establishment both times he was elected, while Kamala and Biden sought to continue the status quo. I can make it make sense: when a tariff is introduced the government get increased tax revenue. That revenue goes into the US economy rather than just purely all out to the foreign entity. This in turn cheapens taxes in other sectors and potentially provides or maintains jobs by preventing those foreign entities from eliminating US businesses. Its why Tariffs exists, its not like there’s literally no upside. Sure certain things may get more expensive, but the idea is more money stays in America and the GDP of the country stays high. If chinese car manufacturers price out tesla, and tesla shrinks, then theres less jobs and less capital at home. Thus, a tarriff.

The belief that Trump was good for the economy is so weird. He inherited an economy that had been growing for 8 years straight under Obama. Plus a yearly declining unemployment rate. And to be fair he did not stagger this growth. But he did blow up the deficit, which is weird if the economy was doing so great. But hardly any policy he enacted effected the economy in a positive way. Then covid happened. And I would not blame any large economic changes on Trump that happened during this time. But that also means that I would not credit him for the cheap gasoline during this time. Only the large excess deaths I would hold him at least partially responsible for. But somehow Biden gets blamed for all the Covid fallout. While the increase in inflation, gasoline and grocery prices happened in almost every country. And even though he got inflation under control faster than any other first world country, he still gets all the blame. The economic reality today is due to the covid fallout, corporate opportunism, Trumps stimulus AND yeah also Biden's stimulus. That is why it is so short sighted to think Trump would be better on the economy. And the ironic part is. The next four years trump will take credit for Biden's ''Infrastructure Bill'' and ''the science and chips act''. Two things that will be good for the economy in the long term.

@Chris Evans Social issues (other than abortion, which prevented a red wave in 2022) were low priority for voters. Economy and immigration were key, and right wing messaging was more powerful on those fronts. Inflation was a worldwide phenomenon so there was an incumbency disadvantage across the board. It’s entirely possible that if Trump won in 2020, HIS admin would be facing the fire unless they pulled off a miracle post-pandemic recovery. We don’t really know as the COVID fallout was a novel situation.

I agree with Colin that this was a referendum on the current power structures, especially of the Democratic Party, but it’s also why I think candidates like Shapiro, Whitmer, and god knows Newsom would have all lost too. It’s going to take a Bernie-type figure (too late to run him now) with a clear populist message that’s not bogged down by the elitism that’s been associated, rightly or not, with things like identity politics and defending institutions for the Democrats to have a hope of winning a national election.
