A lot of foreigners do get confused about how tipping works in the US since the info is kinda gatekept. You see, in the US, there is the minimum wage and the tipped wage. The federal minimum is $7.25 and the tipped wage is $3, with nearly every state being higher than that. For example, Ohio is $10.70 and $5.35. Most people know this and the serving staff make you think that if you don't tip them they will only have the $5.35 but that is not true. By US law if The tipped staff don't make the $10.70 after their tips, the Boss has to pay the difference. So the Waitress who tells you she will only bring home $43 that day since no one tipped is lying because they have to make the $86 and if they make anything less than that in tips then they boss has to pay it. There are other wait staff that will show you a paystub or check with a tiny amount of $30 for 40 hours on it. That is also manipulation by them, you see Tips are TAXed. since tips are cash how they are taxed is via there regular $5.35 per hour wage. When they are showing you this tiny check its due to them getting so many tips there reg wage was taken in taxes. Finally there is the truth of what Tipped workers make, well it goes by person. Well I delivered Pizza in high school I made about 600 in the 24 hours I worked a week after classes.

Tipping has become a cage, more or less, for those working in the food industry. Yes, they need money to survive but at the same time, youre depending on the generosity of others to let you survive. If folks stopped working where tips make your income, maybe tips would disappear and an actual healthy wage would appear.

God I wish we could get rid of tipping it isn't the early 1900's anymore

Yeah I remember when a "Standard" tip was 15%, with 20% for good service. These days they want 20% or higher.
