A quick stop at the canteen, for another hamburger or two… okay, three. I was hungry. Then it was the long ride back to town.
I could feel myself starting to get drowsy. Who could blame me after the day I had, not to mention all that food. So, I did what I usually did to stay awake, I called Sadie.
“Hey you,” I said when she answered.
“David,” she greeted me matter-of-factly. “Driving home?”
“Yes, but for the last time,” I said.
“You got it?” she said. “That research position?”
“Yes, I did!” I couldn’t help smiling even though she couldn’t see it.
“What kind of research will you be doing?” she asked.
“Ah… actually it’s in Genetics,” I said.
“Genetics?” she echoed. “That’s kind of odd for an Electrical Engineer. You’re not thinking of switching majors, are you? I mean, we’ve worked this all out. We have our 10-year-plan.”
“No, nothing like that,” I said. “You know I took it mostly for the on-campus housing. These drives are killing me, almost literally.”
“I know,” she said. “I’d just hate to see all the time your getting back wasted on some off-major research project. How much time is it going to take from your weekly schedule?”
“Practically none at all,” I said, “unless you count dealing with my roommate.”
“Oh, you have a roommate now. What’s he like?” she asked.
“He’s a narcissistic twit. You won’t believe this, but he’s covered the room with pictures of himself!”
“Seriously?” She said. “Is he at least good looking?”
“Only in a supermodel kind of way, but we both know these things are only superficial. Inside, well there’s not much there.”
“He sounds horrible!” she said.
“Well, at least he’s friendly… a little too friendly in some ways… in fact, he’s kind of hard to take. But, you know, I’ll handle it.”
“Well, if narcissistic and too friendly is the worst you can say about him, I’d say you did pretty well.”
“That’s because you haven’t met him. Oh, wait! You’re coming to visit next week, aren’t you?” I said.
“Well…,” she said, “we’ll see. My schedule is pretty busy, too. Just because I’m an English major doesn’t mean I’m not working hard.”
“I know… I know,” I said. “But I was hoping, you know, maybe I could get rid of the roommate for a couple of hours and we could—”
“Hold it right there, mister,” she said. “That’s not the plan. The plan is we wait til we’re married.”
“I was never a fan of this plan,” I said.
“I know, but we both agreed it was for the best,” she said.
“No,” I said, “you just refused to discuss it anymore.”
“I don’t want to argue with you,” she said. “Look at the time. I really have to be going. Take care,” she said and then hung up.
Great, now I had to drive the rest of the way home by myself. I put on some music to help, but for some reason I was extra tired today.
I managed to keep from falling asleep until I got back, but only just. I was going to do some packing, but all I wound up doing was crawling into bed and going to sleep.
