But what this gay pirate show does just as well with its exploration of queerness is use Taika Waititi’s Blackbeard -- through his relationship with the main character Stede Bonnet -- to tell an allegorical story about how close-knit toxic masculinity is to internalized homophobia, and how one’s journey of emancipation can be more difficult than it seems.
