It's not really about religion anymore - it's about Irish vs British. Its just that people who consider themselves Irish and want to see Ireland reunited happen to be Catholic (and Catholics were treated like dirt in NI after Ireland was partitioned) whereas Protestants see themselves as British and want to remain part of the UK.

Lots of Glaswegians (and Scots in general) have Irish ancestry due to mass immigration. There was a lot of anti-Irish sentiment and resentment in Glasgow at the time so Rangers became the antithesis: Protestant and British as opposed to Catholic and Irish/Scottish
