In the novels, you can tell Nick is much taller and bigger than Charlie so Kit working out and being more buff seems to align with his character

I feel like that's just a very short emotional distance from "I think *I* love him." Yes? The rainbows around Charlie just after that shot would seem to agree!

Having a shot at someone's queerness is not the same as any other kind of bullying. Queerphobic behavior isn't just one kid harassing another - that mockery and derision carries with it the weight and force of our entire culture's bigotry toward queer people. When my brother called me a faggot, he wasn't just my belligerent younger sibling. He was the rest of the world right at that moment, our culture's bigotry lending his words weight that it wouldn't ordinarily carry. And really, that's the essence of bigotry. It's a force multiplier, in a lot of ways. It's like society builds up momentum behind bigoted slurs, taunts, and "jokes," making them land harder and cut deeper than they ordinarily would otherwise. Marginalized folks who are the target of bigoted behavior - even by people who are just looking for a way under your skin, who don't actually hold prejudices of that type - can feel the impact of those words far beyond what the individual does or even intends. They hit with the weight of the whole world.
