Kettles were more likely to be copper or tin coated and usually would have a certain level of shine. So the saying refers to either a dark pot commenting on a small amount of soot on a mostly clean kettle, or what's more likely to the dark pot seeing it's own reflection in the shiny kettle accidentally calling out the pot's own issues.
