Pots were more often a dark color like cast iron or were soot covered from fire. Kettles were more likely to be copper or tin coated and usually would have a certain level of shine. So the saying refers to either a dark pot commenting on a small amount of soot on a mostly clean kettle, or what's more likely to the dark pot seeing it's own reflection in the shiny kettle accidentally calling out the pot's own issues.

Well, the actual quote is "The pot calls the kettle black," and is a way of calling someone a hypocrite. Another phrase/expression of calling someone a hypocrite is "Look who's talking?" Hope this helps :-)
