There is a new illicit drug circulating the black market folks are calling “Instinct”. Users of it experience an impairment of higher cognitive functions and abstract thinking, but in return, it temporarily removes all of their human social mores, and they experience a euphoric state of heightened senses, hyper instinctuality and lack of inhibitions, leaving them feeling like a wild animal. While the effects wear off in a matter of hours, prolonged usage over the course of a week results in addiction and side-effects including permanent neurological alterations, shifts in the users personality, new behaviors arising spontaneously which cause distress and confusion to the individual, and persistent hyper-vigilance. Many subjects experience concern as once familiar objects startle them and they find themselves exploring them in ways that are awkward to themselves and outside observers. During this stage of addiction, the user typically is engaged in rationalizing their behaviors after the fact. When one hospitalized patient was found in their room on all fours sniffing the ground and asked what they were doing, the patient appeared startled out of their state, displaying confusion and claiming that they had dropped something.
 

Continued usage past this point creates more dramatic affects. Users start experiencing hallucinations of strange body parts, musculature and skeletal structure aching and shifting around, elongation of the tail bone. In reality, these are not hallucinations and are empirically observable physical alterations, but in their state, their mind is struggling to explain what is happening to them, especially with limited meta-representational thought. Overdose at this stage is extremely likely, resulting in a dramatic and highly painful metamorphosis into a new animal. It seems that each individual’s final species is different, an amplification of tendencies and similarities in their personality prior the final species outcome. Such behavior patterns are also predictable in the early stages leading up to this. After a user completes the metamorphosis, the animal displays no behaviors indicative of the former human.
