In my town drivers ed was not a course at school but a private course you had to sign up for on the weekend. If you took the class and passed you could take the certificate to your insurance company and get a deduction on your premium, and the better you did, the better the deduction. When I was taking drivers ed the guy who had been doing it for years was a creepy guy who gave me the ick, and right as I was supposed to take the last test we got the notice from my uncle who was the DA that the teacher was about to get arrested for a DUI. My mom quickly got on the phone to try and get me in to take the test or at least get my certificate before he lost his teaching license and credibility. We thankfully were able to get it and we got like $100-$200 off the insurance.

In AK you can get a permit at 14, and can drive with any licensed driver that is over 18 years old. You can get your drivers license at 16, but the license is provisional license that limits you to driving only with family members in the car (to prevent teens from messing around and getting distracted, but no one really followed this rule) and you can't drive at certain times 11PM - 5AM, and it is removed when you turn 18. You then have to take and pass a drug/alcohol test once you turn 21 to renew your license.

On our way to my first driver’s license test, my mom’s car broke down. It started back up so we decided to still go to the appointment. I passed the written and then while doing the driving portion I was doing perfect until FLAMES shot straight up through the hood of the car! Needless to say, we stopped the test and it was considered null & void due to mechanical issues. They had to come get us. I was mortified. The exam guy, was like, “whelp, this is a new one. You can come back when the car is fixed.” Flame touch car. First & last time it did that though. 😂 I came back and passed it all a week later. 👍🏼❤️‍🔥

I failed my first time because I had to stop at an intersection crossing a busy street and there was a bush completely blocking the view of traffic so I creeped forward in the crosswalk to see if it was clear. I didn't pass my learners permit test the first time either. I was so sad but I passed the second time though. I grew up in Virginia, so you have to be 15 years old to be eligible to get a learners permit and you get a booklet to study everything about driving. The learners permit test is in two sections, the first section is 10 questions and are all about road signs and you have too get 100% to move on to the next section of the test. In the second section, it is multiple choice questions and you have to get an 80% to pass. Then you have to drive with a licensed driver in your car for six months. After that, you move on to take a class to get your license. The class is like a week long and you take a test all the end (also 80% to pass). Then a driving portion of the class with an instructor and other students in the car but it was based on hours driven. You had to drive 100 hours to get your license. It was so funny because the instructor would drive to the first students house, then that student would take over, drive to the next students house, switch, and again. Then we would go back to the first persons house and drop them off and so on. It was interesting but also fun. But then, I move to New Orleans a couple month later after getting my license and honestly I am so glad I learned how to drive there instead of Virginia because people drive crazy down here so it really makes you a good driver and to be aware of everyone around you.
