Unadi Singh - Turnaround | HD

I've got some really interesting stuff cooking on the Subscribestar side of things and the main gal who's gonna help me accomplish that is Unadi!
I felt that before I started working with her again in earnest she needed a character refresh to differentiate her from the "Alps Era" of Circus of Stones.
Redesigning Unadi really made me think hard about what I wanted the Mitanni to be, and the answer I came up with was "dragonkin". Not necessarily Kobolds, but definitely descendants of dragons, with their ruler being a full-on dragon who needs to use representatives to carry his will to other foreign countries (he's a bit too big to fit at most conference tables!).
In any case, making the Mitanni dragonkin opened up all kinds of possibilities for me to play with Unadi's shapes and silhouette! As you saw in the sketch, I briefly playued with the idea of making her face much more kobold like, but I decided that it was best to keep her old face-shape, and instead give her a set of little ears to break up that perfect "baby head" of hers.
Along with that, I gave her a tail-floof similar to far-eastern dragons, and a nice short "boy cut" hair so it doesn't get in the way when she's doing acrobatics.
I think Unadi has been the most challenging character redesign I've ever done but I'm really proud of how she's turned out. I'm definitely looking forward to working with her and her new Djinni, Ariij.

Seile's not going away permanently but he's kind of a detriment to Unadi's progress at this point. We've got a story draft and I promise Unadi still gets PLENTY of action from both men and women alike!

Just need some time to get used to her new look. But replacing Seile, for shame! I'm a dude and I'm going to miss the cute hyena boy. Though I guess it is time he rescued his dad.

2024-11-02 04:21:27 +0000 UTCNormal hair is common because it works. There are two problems with feathers: - Lizards with feathers isn't actually a thing, as far as I can tell. I couldn't find any contemporary references that weren't either AI generated or dinosaur concept art. Unadi isn't a dinosaur in any case. - Feathers can't be styled. They just grow in one direction and usually grow all over the body instead of a single line going down the skull. Not to mention, as I've said before on the discord, her silhouette before was a baby's head with a nail in it. It looked awful. Or at least it did to me, which is why I absolutely hated drawing her. The reason she looks more "feline" now is because there's a bit of shading denoting her nose. That wasn't there before, but she doesn't have a cat's nose. Her mouth and nose actually hasn't changed at all- I just added some shading to show there's a shape there. Anyway, not trying to convince you to like her- just rationalizing my decisions I guess.

2024-11-01 15:30:48 +0000 UTCOh, I read it, still had the thought about feathers ^^ (I thought the general consense is that dragons, kobolds etc are lizards/reptiles xD) P.S. I need to admit, that I do like the previous version more. Normal hair is just so common, that every design with not much or no at all is much more interesting and unique. (And with the ears and mouth section, she looks more feline then dragonish/reptile) Thats why I liked her, since she was pretty unique in your OC roaster, since you dont got many bird and reptilish characters.

2024-11-01 15:26:42 +0000 UTCSee that initial sentence where you said "frills/feathers/whatever they are...". Yeah, that was the dilemma I ran into. Frills and feathers don't "style" like hair does so what you're saying is literally impossible. They grow in a single direction and it just doesn't look right on a humanoid head . I'm telling you- I consulted with several people that I trust on this and they all came to the same conclusion: make her a kobold with horns/ etc. , or give her hair. I chose the latter since it seemed the lesser of the two "evils. I know you'll miss the old design and lots of people just don't like change, but this version is actually fun for me to draw if that makes you feel any better about it. And yes, the colors layered into her hair are meant as a callback to the original frills.

2024-11-01 14:06:48 +0000 UTCI wonder, would it have worked out if you kept the original frills/feathers/whatever they are BUT you made them the same shape as her new hair including the fringe. I see by the way the colors are layered, her hair is reminiscent of those original frills.
