In 1986, I was 15 and realizing that I was gay, when AIDS hit. I was so scared that I didn't go all the way sexually til my late 20's. I remember watching a TV movie called An Early Frost. It was about a closeted gay man who got AIDS and his parents found out. In one scene, he was very sick and his parents called an ambulance. When it got there, the paramedics realized he had AIDS and they refused to touch him or take him to a hospital. These things happened in real life. Some hospitals would even refuse to admit people with it. If they did some nurses and doctors would even go in their rooms. A tragic time for the LGBT community and one I pray we never see again.

Later, in the mid 60s, one of the US television networks, CBS, presented a documentary called “The Homosexual” that presented a very negative view of gay people. It wasn’t really until the 70s that some people began to be more accepting, and of course, to this day there are plenty of people out there, who would consider it not just acceptable, but righteous to be openly homophobic. So though things are much better today, we still don’t live in a totally safe world, even in countries where being LGBTQ+ is legal.
