Loved this reaction so much ❤️

Clayton Bockman

Hahahahaha omg, your reaction to the foot scene made me laugh so much as mine was exactly the same 🤣 This is such a brilliant show and an emotional rollercoaster. Looking forward to watching this with you and seeing your interpretation of it. I've already watched it with Jackie and Josh and Alex 🙂 Brad just binged watched it also ( All YouTube reactors ) love this show and I love Jonathan Bailey 🙂

Cathy Mills

Me too. I think Hawk calling Tim that nickname was meant to be endearing, recognizing Tim’s innocence.

Reem

A bit late because I waited to start the series with my husband. I think the Skippy nickname is meant to be endearing, a reflection of Tim’s innocent eagerness. McCarthy and Cohn are historical figures unfortunately. Totally reprehensible. McCarthy was discredited pretty quickly but Cohn slimed his way through several more decades. Massive hypocrite. Closeted gay man who publicly persecuted other queers. Wormed his way into both the Nixon and Reagan White Houses. He also represented Murdoch and Trump. He’s a key character in Angels In America. There’s a bit of poetic justice in his painful death from AIDS. I really despise the man and everything he stood for if you can’t tell. The scare tactics and oppression are still happening today. Instead of gays and lesbians though, the right wing whack jobs are targeting trans people.

love this show

This is gay history you won’t find anywhere else; certainly not in schools.

I’m glad you are watching this for several reasons, including that it’s very well done, with great attention to detail, and that it provides a bit of a history lesson about what it was like to be gay in the not so distant past. You really should read up about McCarthyism and the red scare of the early 50s, that included what’s called a lavender scare towards non-heterosexuals. Even at the age of 67, which means I wasn’t born until four years after the earliest scenes of this episode, I lived through a period where homosexuality was not just seen as a sickness, but was still criminalized. Actually, in some parts of the US, it wasn’t until 2002 that the last sodomy laws were invalidated. So, although I didn’t experience a world, that was quite like what we see in the 50s scenes in this episode, I certainly grew up in a world where being gay was demonized. (I also grew up in a Protestant religious denomination that was extremely anti-gay, but that’s a whole added layer.) i’m definitely one of those people who regrets not growing up at a time when I could’ve been myself, but I also am glad that things have changed, and that people like you can make videos about sexuality without fear. I’m also concerned that if things go the wrong way in the US in the next couple of years, times like the ones seen on this show might very well come back to the US.

I don’t think in this case that it’s derogatory either. Just a sign of the times

Yes more fellow travellers pleazd

Great reaction and insights. As a gay person, it really makes me sad to see how bad things were back in the 50’s, and then in the 80’s the AIDS epidemic. I first came out in the 80’s and guys were so afraid of getting HIV, or even fearful of being tested. Now, we are so lucky things are so much better. But we must protect our rights as there are still politicians who want to ban gay marriage and gay rights. Even the Supreme Court has indicated they would like to ban gay marriage if a case came in front of them. This is not the moderate Supreme Court of 2015.

It's funny hearing Skippy. People in the industry that I work in call people Skippy if they accept work below customary fees and they typically don't do quality work. I might hear someone say, Some Skippy will do it for cheap. I'm sure there are lots of meanings tho and I think in the show it's probably not meant in a derogatory way but maybe just his cute nickname,

Joe Lancaster

Yes, definitely a history lesson for me too. This is actually my 3rd time watching this episode and I pick up little bits here and there that I missed before. I'm glad you are watching the series. It's nice hearing your thoughts about it too.

Joe Lancaster

Great reaction Courtney. With this series we’re all going to get a History lesson through this love story. In regard to Skippy’s name, in the 50s nicknames were big especially among men. I was just a kid at the time but I remember a friend’s last name was Campbell and he was called “Beans” (as in Campbell’s baked beans).
