Mist rises where the thundering falls crash against jagged rocks, churning the river into a frothing torrent that carves its way through the highland valley. The roar of rushing water fills the air, mingling with the scent of pine and wildflowers as the forest watches from the river’s edge. Here, hidden trails lead to forgotten ruins, hunters stalk elusive prey, and something stirs beneath the surface of the crystal-clear pools.

Water plummets over steep cliffs, cascading into a river that winds through the valley below. Jagged rocks break the surface of the churning rapids, while calmer pools form along the shore where the current slows. The riverbanks are lush with thick underbrush, vibrant flowers, and towering evergreens, their branches swaying in the misty breeze. As the land slopes gently away from the water, the dense forest takes over, its shadowed depths promising both shelter and secrets.

Notes:

Environmental Hazards – Slick, moss-covered rocks near the waterfall and riverbanks make footing treacherous, potentially causing slips or forcing Dexterity checks. The powerful current in the deeper parts of the river can sweep creatures away if they lose their footing. Dense underbrush on the forest edge creates difficult terrain, slowing movement and providing concealment.
Possible Loot – A hunter’s forgotten satchel caught in the roots of a riverside tree contains preserved rations, a skinning knife, and a few silver coins. Hidden among the rocks near the falls, a small, waterlogged chest holds a rusted dagger with an emerald-studded hilt. An old offering bowl tucked into a natural alcove behind the waterfall contains a handful of polished gemstones, left for a long-forgotten spirit.
Creatures or Enemies – A territorial river drake lurks in the deeper pools, waiting to ambush anything that disturbs its domain. Bandits use the forested edges as cover, setting up a toll for travelers crossing the river. Fey spirits—either mischievous or vengeful—watch from the shadows, deciding whether intruders are friend or foe.
Encounter – The party stumbles upon the remnants of a violent struggle—bloodstained rocks, broken weapons, and scattered belongings suggest someone fought for their life. A lone survivor, battered and near collapse, begs for help, warning of something unnatural lurking beneath the waterfall. As the party investigates, the roar of the falls masks the sound of something emerging from the mist.
Tactical Feature – The elevated cliffs along the waterfall provide excellent vantage points for ranged attackers, while dense underbrush along the shoreline offers natural concealment for ambushes. The rushing current can serve as a natural barrier, forcing enemies to find safe crossings or risk being swept away. A hidden alcove behind the waterfall allows for stealthy movement or an unexpected escape route.
